About 1 in 10 people die from DVT complications.

🌟But what is a DVT?
Deep vein thrombosis is another word for blood clot that forms deep in the veins of your legs. It is a dangerous condition that partially or completely blocks the flow of blood back to your heart. In addition, the blood clot can break free and travel to your lungs, causing other health complications such as a pulmonary embolus (blood clot in the lungs that makes it difficult to breathe).

🌟Risk factors:
☑️injury to vein
☑️poor blood flow
☑️increased estrogen
☑️heart disease
☑️lung disease
☑️obesity
☑️age
☑️family history of DVT

🌟How to Prevent DVT
Steps to prevent DVT include:
☑️Maintaining a healthy weight - being overweight or obese can lead to stagnation of blood in the veins
☑️Eating well - include sources of Vitamin K such as kale, spinach, meat, cheese, eggs
☑️Exercise - such as walking, swimming, ankle pumps, seated march
☑️Avoid smoking - smoking increases the risk of heart attacks and stroke which can increase the risk of blood clots
☑️Wear compression stockings if you are at risk for DVT

Today, February 16, 2024, is National Caregivers Day! On this day, we acknowledge the efforts of caregivers in the country. These individuals work selflessly to provide quality care to those who are vulnerable and are in need of assistance with daily activities. Caregivers are not just limited to healthcare professionals, but they also include family and friends. Let's spread awareness about what they do for our loved ones and recognize the challenges they face. Thank you to our caregivers!

June is Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month. We observe this month by educating and discussing with others about Alzheimer's disease and other dementia related diseases. We can also show support for those who are suffering from Alzheimer's and other brain diseases by talking to them and reminding them they are special. In addition, we can wear the color purple to show our support for them as they battle the disease.

Today, May 31st, 2023 is National Senior Health and Fitness Day. On this day, over 100,000 older adults will participate in health events across the nation. Some activities older adults may participate in include: yoga, swimming, and walking. How can you observe National Senior Health and Fitness Day as a non-senior? We can spend time with our elderly loved ones doing physical activities, host a fitness event for the seniors, or volunteer at health fairs.
