💡 Disease Spotlight
🦠 Gout
📌 What is it?
Gout is a type of arthritis that causes sudden, intense joint pain—often in the big toe. It happens when uric acid builds up and forms crystals in the joints.
🔍 What causes it?
Gout is caused by high levels of uric acid in the blood. Triggers include rich foods (like red meat and seafood), alcohol (especially beer), dehydration, or certain medications. Genetics and kidney function also play a role.
⚠️ Signs and Symptoms
- Sudden, severe joint pain (often overnight)
- Swelling, redness, and warmth over the joint
- Most commonly affects the big toe, but can involve knees, ankles, or fingers
- The pain can feel like an infection or sprain
🧪 How it’s diagnosed
We usually diagnose gout with a physical exam and medical history. Sometimes we do a blood test for uric acid or test joint fluid to confirm. Timing matters—testing during an active flare gives clearer results.
💊 How we treat or manage it
- Anti-inflammatory medications (like NSAIDs or colchicine)
- Medications to lower uric acid for long-term control
- Diet changes and hydration help prevent flares
- Some research suggests tart cherries or tart cherry juice may help reduce flare frequency
- Avoiding triggers like alcohol or organ meats
👥 Who gets it most?
Gout is more common in men over 40, people with a family history, or those with high blood pressure, obesity, or kidney issues.
