How Is Myopia (Nearsightedness) Treated in Children?

In our last post we talked about what myopia is. Today we want to share how it can be treated and managed in children.

Myopia occurs when the eye grows too long, causing distant objects to appear blurry. The goal of treatment is not only to improve vision, but also to slow the progression of myopia as children grow.

There are several evidence-based options doctors may recommend:

👓 Myopia Control Glasses or Special Contact Lenses
Certain lenses are designed to correct vision while also helping slow the eye’s elongation.

🌙 Orthokeratology (Overnight Lenses)
These specially designed contact lenses are worn overnight and gently reshape the cornea while a child sleeps so they can see clearly during the day without glasses.

💧 Low-Dose Atropine Eye Drops
Prescribed eye drops used nightly that have been shown to slow myopia progression in many children.

🌳 Healthy Visual Habits
Encouraging children to spend more time outdoors and taking breaks from screens and close-up work can also support healthy eye development.

Early detection and management are important because higher levels of myopia later in life can increase the risk of eye health complications. Regular comprehensive eye exams allow eye doctors to monitor vision and recommend the best treatment plan for each child.

If you have questions about myopia management for your child, our team is always happy to help! 👁️✨

Myopia (nearsightedness) in children is a common vision condition where distant objects appear blurry while close objects remain clear. It happens when the eye grows too long or the cornea is too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. Early eye exams help detect myopia so it can be managed and children can see clearly at school and during everyday activities. 👓👁️
