CRNAs administer a variety of anesthetics to patients as an individual practitioner or in collaboration with surgeons, anesthesiologists, dentists, podiatrists and other qualified healthcare professionals for every type of operation or procedure – from open-heart surgery to pain management programs. As advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) CRNAs are given a high degree of autonomy and professional respect. Currently, there are over 54,000 nurse anesthetists and student nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) in the United States with approximate demographics of 60% women and 40% men (as compared with 10% men in the nursing profession as a whole). Additionally, CRNAs are the sole providers of anesthesia in approximately two-thirds of all rural hospitals in the United States. The minimum program admission criteria, experience, and education required to become a CRNA include:

A baccalaureate or graduate degree in nursing. An unencumbered license as a registered professional nurse and/or APRN in the United States or its territories and protectorates. A minimum of one-year full-time work experience, or its part-time equivalent, as a registered nurse in a critical care setting within the United States, its territories, or a U.S. The average experience of RNs entering nurse anesthesia educational programs is 2.9 years. As of August 2019, there were 121 accredited nurse anesthesia programs in the United States and Puerto Rico utilizing 1,870 active clinical sites. Beginning Jan. 1, 2022, all students matriculating into an accredited program must be enrolled in a doctoral program. Currently, 91 nurse anesthesia programs are approved to award doctoral degrees (Doctorate of Nursing Practice or DNP) for entry into practice. The UAMS College of Nursing Nurse Anesthesia Program is a doctoral-level educational program awarding a DNP. Nurse anesthesia educational programs range from 28-51 months, depending on university requirements. Programs include clinical settings and experiences. Graduates of nurse anesthesia educational programs have an average of 9,369 hours of clinical and nursing experience by the time they graduate and become CRNAs. Some CRNAs pursue a fellowship in a specialized area of anesthesiology such as chronic pain management following the attainment of their degree in nurse anesthesia. Nurse anesthesia educational programs have admission requirements in addition to the above minimums.

🔆🔆 We love highlighting our amazing CRNAs and up now is Lauren Hart. 🔆🔆

🎉 One of our favorite things about Lauren is her ability to speak up for our team. 📣 Her passion for making UAMS a better place is evident through her strong work ethic and organization. 💪🏼 We are proud to have had Lauren as a part of our CRNA family for her entire 8 year career. Her favorite part of being a CRNA is, “being able to provide a comfortable environment for patients and their families prior to their surgery and during!” We see this every day through her dedication to her patients and their safety. 🏥⛑️

✨Lauren previously served as the Clinical Coordinator and Program Mentor for the Anesthesia Techs. 👩🏼‍🏫 She worked tirelessly to help develop a training and management program for our techs and was available for any and all questions/problems. 🔎 Anesthesia techs play such a valuable role in helping our team provide safe anesthesia, and Lauren did an outstanding job in this position. 🙌🏼

👩🏼‍⚕️When asked what her favorite part of working at UAMS was Lauren stated, “the group of CRNAs is special here. It’s a small close-knit family that shows consideration and support for one another. 🥰 A group like this makes my career even more meaningful.” Our group wouldn’t be the same without caring CRNAs like Lauren! 🩺😊

When Lauren isn’t providing excellent patient care at UAMS you can probably find her traveling 🚙 , going to the lake 🚤, planning events/parties 🎊 , and spending time with her beautiful family . She loves to listen to 90s country 🤠 and can’t live without cheese dip 🧀 🫕 and sweets!🍪🧁One thing she’ll never do again is ride in a helicopter! 🚁 We are more than happy to keep you down here on the ground with us, Lauren!! We are very grateful for all of your hard work and dedication to UAMS and love having you in our ❤️👏🏼😁

There’s a lot of exciting things happening for the CRNAs at UAMS! 🌟

Today, we gained 2 more sites utilizing the supervision model on the main campus - GI and Bone Marrow! Adding these areas makes the majority of anesthetics provided by UAMS CRNAs supervision. One Day Surgery (ODS) and the Jones Eye Institute (JEI) began using supervision in December and The Orthopedic and Spine Hospital (TOSH) and The Urology Center last July. Their success has paved the way for this supervision expansion. ✨

The Department of Anesthesiology started a new staffing model today that allows the CRNAs more flexibility to function more as our own group. We are, of course, still collaborating with our amazing Anesthesiologists in all surgical areas and enjoy working with our team. A huge thank you to everyone who has made this dream a reality for our CRNAs! Progress feels great, and we are very grateful for these opportunities at UAMS. 🎉❤️
