Myth 2: I am too old/ too young to be an organ donor.

Truth: There is no age limit for someone to be a donor. Your medical condition at the time of death is how donors are determined. If you are under 18, your parent or legal guardian can consent for donation. It is important to talk to your family about your wish to donate.

Police officers sign up for the badge to put their lives on the line whenever necessary, but being a living organ donor is an extra badge of honor.

Donate Life Month celebrates those who give the ultimate gift.
Today more than 105,000 people are waiting for life saving organ transplants. Misunderstanding around organ donation is one of the biggest hurdles to meeting the need. Working to help understand those issues can help save a life.

Myth: Health care providers don't work as hard to save the life of someone who is a registered organ donor:

Truth: All health care providers will work hard to save your life. It is our number one priority. Organ Donation is only discussed when every attempt to save a patient's life has failed.

Transplant Patient Spotlight – Meet Chad Noles
For Chad Noles, it all started with abnormal test results during an annual exam.
As a healthy and active man with a 20-year career as a wildland firefighter for the state’s forestry division, he was surprised to learn something was wrong with his liver. He saw various specialists and underwent many tests until eventually, he was referred to the UAMS Health Liver Transplant Clinic, where he was diagnosed with Stage 4 non-alcoholic cirrhosis and approved for a transplant.
About six months after his diagnosis, Noles, who had dropped 60 pounds, became ill. He was airlifted to UAMS, where he was comatose for three days. Doctors told him that he couldn’t drive or work.
Noles and his family hoped he would find a liver soon.
Then a distant relative contacted Noles. Another family member had suffered a heart attack and was on life support, not expected to survive. That family wanted to donate the liver to Noles and asked how to make that happen. They were given contact information for the UAMS team.
Noles and his family didn’t want to get their hopes up, but miraculously, the liver was a match. Noles received “the call,” and the UAMS team flew to Shreveport, Louisiana, to recover the liver.
On April 4, 2024, while everyone else in Little Rock was eagerly awaiting the upcoming total eclipse, Noles received his new liver. Ten months later, he is doing well and looking forward to retirement, when he plans on fishing every chance he gets.
The road to a transplant is a long, arduous journey, so the Noles family has some advice for those who find themselves on it.
Chad Noles: “Keep pushing yourself to stay active because it helps keep your mind clear and helps you recover faster. Listen to your doctors and be patient. God has a plan for you, and it does get better.”
Tammey Noles: “My advice to caregivers is to research and read all you can about the disease. There is a lot of good information out there. Don’t be afraid to speak up and advocate for your loved one. You need to be prepared for anything – liver disease is very unpredictable. Please be patient with your loved one, and don’t be embarrassed to accept help from others.”
