UAMS Center for Birth Defects Research & Prevention The Arkansas Center has an impressive history of conducting population-based birth defects surveillance & multicenter research for over 20 years.

The Arkansas Center for Birth Defects Research & Prevention is one of 10 centers across the nation funded by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) with the overall goal to understand the causes of birth defects. That research includes the two multicenter, case-control studies—the National Birth Defects Prevention Study (NBDPS) & the Birth Defects Study To Evaluate Pregnancy ExposureS (BD-STEPS)—both of which had their populations enrolled from the state’s population-based birth defects registry, the Arkansas Reproductive Health Monitoring System (ARHMS). The Arkansas Center’s Mission is to reduce the occurrence of birth defects & their long-term physical, social, & economic impact in Arkansas & the United States through innovative research, training, prevention & community partnerships.
