This Black History Month, we honor Dr. Samuel L. Kountz, an Arkansas-born pioneer whose work forever changed kidney transplantation. From growing up in segregated Arkansas to becoming a world-renowned transplant surgeon, Dr. Kountz broke barriers, saved countless lives, and helped advance organ donation worldwide.
His legacy lives on through the lives he healed, the doors he opened, and the future he helped shape. ๐Ÿ’š๏ฟฝ

Donate Life America is excited to share that more than 130,000 people have registered their decision to become organ, eye and tissue donors through MyChart, the nationโ€™s most widely used patient portal. DLA began its close collaboration with Epic MyChart in May 2025 to improve the donor registration experience. Patients have embraced this innovative and private pathway to resounding effect.
"Reaching more than 130,000 registrations is a monumental milestone and a source of hope for the more than 100,000 people in the United States currently waiting for a transplant. Every one of these registrations represents hope for patients on the national transplant waiting list." โ€“David Fleming, President & CEO of Donate Life America ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’š

"My mission is simple but profound: to be a voice for those waiting, to spread knowledge about the life-changing impact of organ donation, and to inspire others to say 'yes' to giving the gift of life. I will never stop fighting for this cause, because Iโ€™ve seen firsthand the difference one person can make." In 2023, Andrea began the testing process to determine whether she was a good candidate for living donation for her friend in need of a kidney; however, it was determined that they were not compatible. Undeterred, Andrea decided that she would altruistically donate her kidney to someone she didn't know, giving the gift of life in December 2024. Today, Andrea is an avid advocate for organ, tissue and eye donation and the mission. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’š
