🎉Today marks 2 years since Arkansas’ first and only proton therapy center opened its doors! 🎉

Before the Proton Center of Arkansas opened in 2023, families often had to travel hundreds of miles out of state for this sought-after cancer treatment. Recognizing that burden, UAMS, Arkansas Children’s, Baptist Health and Proton International joined together to bring advanced proton therapy home to Arkansas.

Since then, the center has delivered precise, life-changing care for nearly 500 patients, ages 1 to 93, with cancers of the brain, head & neck, breast, prostate, lung, GI and more — right here where they live.

Here’s to two years of innovation and healing — and to many more lives impacted in the years ahead. 🎉 UAMS - University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute Baptist Health Arkansas Children's Proton International

Dr. Santanu Samanta, a radiation oncologist at UAMS, explains how works and why it’s a powerful option for cancer treatment. Unlike traditional radiation, proton therapy uses positively charged particles that stop at the edge of the tumor—delivering precise treatment with no exit dose. This reduces harm to nearby healthy tissues and is especially beneficial for pediatric patients and those needing re-irradiation.
