April is National Occupational Therapy month! Many people may not know what an occupational therapist, or OT, actually does. An OT can play a role in populations from birth to seniors. They focus on helping people return to daily activities that include, but are not limited to, self care, work, school, and recreational activities. Occupational therapists work with people that may have pain or limitations from a variety of conditions that may include arthritis, strokes, work related injuries, sports injuries, and surgeries and more. At Baptist Health, occupational therapists play an integral role in patient recovery in a variety of settings including acute care, inpatient rehab, long term acute care, home health, and outpatient. In the outpatient setting, OTs specialize in orthopedic and post surgical recovery of the elbow, wrist, and hand along with making splints. From self care tasks like bathing and dressing to higher level activities like playing sports, occupational therapists use creative and innovative treatment ideas to help people return to a wide variety of activities. The OT staff at Baptist health are dedicated to helping our patients achieve the most functional and independent life they can.

03/04/2025

A total knee replacement, or TKA, is one of the most commonly performed and successful surgeries performed in medicine. A TKA is warranted for patients with progressive and debilitating knee pain that may be caused by arthritis, fracture, or disease. Prior to surgery patients often report knee stiffness, swelling, night pain, and painful weight bearing. The knee replacement surgery involves removing damaged portions of the bone and replacing them with artificial parts. Physical therapy plays a crucial role following a TKA procedure. Physical therapy emphasis will include increasing ROM, decreasing swelling, and return of strength and proper walking mechanics. Whether you have just had a knee replacement, or plan to have one in the future, your local Baptist Health Physical Therapy clinic is ready to help you recover!

02/10/2025

Lateral epicondylitis, or tennis elbow, is an overuse injury of the lateral elbow musculature. This injury typically occurs with repeated overuse of the wrist extensor muscles; activities that may cause this include painting, hand tool use, gardening, and, as the name suggests, tennis. A patient presenting with tennis elbow will often have pain with wrist and elbow movement, as well as difficulty with gripping objects and potential decreases in range of motion. Imaging is often used to rule out other injuries, rather than rule tennis elbow in; rather, a diagnosis usually relates to history and manual testing. Once a diagnosis of lateral epicondylitis is confirmed, an initial treatment plan consists of rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Physical or occupational therapy may be prescribed to initiate stretching, strengthening, and pain treatment. A therapist can also help identify activity modifications, and educate on appropriate timing for return to exercise. Contact your local Baptist Health Therapy Center for help with tennis elbow treatment!

01/17/2025

Blood flow restriction, also known as BFR, is an innovative treatment method that allows patients to improve muscle development and strength while working with lower loads or weight. Muscle weakness and atrophy is common after an injury, surgery, or periods of immobilization. Traditional methods for strength training require patients to lift heavier loads or weights in order to achieve muscle development and strength gains. These heavier loads can cause significant strain to an injured or surgical joint or tissues. During BFR, an inflatable cuff is used to safely decrease venous blood flow to the injured area. This creates a reduced oxygen environment for the tissues allowing a patient to work with significantly lighter weight to achieve strength gains and improve muscle atrophy. When combined with a patient specific treatment plan, BFR can help you get back to an active lifestyle following injury or surgery. We offer and utilize this treatment at many of our Baptist Therapy Center locations and would love to answer any questions you may have regarding whether or not this is a good treatment option for you!
