The Arkansas Hospital Association successfully hosted two "Stop The Bleed" courses earlier this week, equipping attendees with the critical skills needed to manage life-threatening bleeding. This American College of Surgeons (ACS) program empowers anyone, from community members to healthcare workers, to act quickly and effectively in a serious emergency.

Participants received expert instruction and hands-on practice in three essential techniques: applying direct pressure, properly packing a wound, and correctly applying a tourniquet. These simple, yet powerful, skills can prevent fatal bleeding and save a life when seconds count.

We are proud to champion this lifesaving education across Arkansas.

What an unforgettable two days! 🎉 Our 2025 Annual Meeting video recap is here, and it perfectly captures the energy, learning, and connection we shared in Little Rock on October 15th and 16th. This year, the conversation focused on some of the most critical challenges facing hospital leadership, and we left inspired to lead change and foster a culture of safety.

A massive thank you to our incredible speakers, including Kim Hodous, Rich Bluni, Command Sergeant Major Gretchen Evans, and patient safety advocate RaDonda Vaught, for sharing their powerful stories and expertise.

A huge congratulations to all our award recipients! Don’t miss our upcoming winter issue of Arkansas Hospitals magazine to view a spread of everyone's achievements.

This Sepsis Awareness Month, let's talk about sepsis and older adults. Did you know that more than 70% of adult sepsis patients are 60 years of age or older? In fact, adults age 65 and older are 13 times more likely to be hospitalized with sepsis than younger individuals.

It's a critical issue, with three-fourths of all sepsis deaths in the U.S. occurring in patients 65 or older. Help protect our loved ones by being aware of the signs and symptoms. Early recognition can make all the difference.

We've developed a new Sepsis Toolkit for Public Awareness to help our member hospitals and communities. Check it out here: https://bit.ly/3JYF5NB

September is Sepsis Awareness Month, and the Quality team at the Arkansas Hospital Association is proud to encourage statewide awareness of this critical issue. We are thrilled to share that Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has officially proclaimed this month as "Sepsis Awareness Month" in Arkansas

Sepsis is a serious and life-threatening response to infection, and it affects 1.7 million Americans annually. Early recognition is key to saving lives, and you can remember the signs with the mnemonic "TIME":

- Temperature
- Infection
- Mental decline
- Extremely ill

Our Director of Quality and Patient Safety just finished up her week in Louisville, Kentucky, for the 2025 Mid-South Critical Access & Rural Hospital Conference! Hosted by the Kentucky Hospital Association, the event brought together rural health care leaders from across the Mid-South to discuss key topics like Medicare Advantage and the 340B Drug Discount Program. We're excited Cindy was able to connect with peers and bring back valuable insights.

The conference included a presentation by Isaac Jimenez, Assistant Director of Public Events & Training at the Arkansas Attorney General's Office, who spoke about common scams and how to avoid them. Attendees also participated in a roundtable discussion covering topics such as gift shops, new fundraisers, and volunteer recruitment updates. An impromptu tour of the gift shop was also a highlight of the day.

Our team attended the Pulaski County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) meeting today to learn about crucial emergency preparedness. We heard from Hilda Booth of the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management (ADEM) about the risks and impacts of a catastrophic earthquake from the New Madrid Seismic Zone. Her presentation included insights on statewide impacts, transportation and communication considerations, and available training programs.

We also learned from Eddie Powell of 811, who reminded us to always call 811 before you dig to prevent damage to underground utilities, pipelines, and more. It's a simple step that keeps our communities safe!
