General information

History The national Interfaith Alliance was created in 1994 to celebrate religious freedom and to challenge the bigotry and hatred arising from religious and political extremism infiltrating American politics. Today, Interfaith Alliance has 185,000 members across the country made up of 75 faith traditions as well as those of no faith tradition. Rev. Dr. Ed Mathews and Rabbi Gene Levy were the first chairs of the Arkansas Interfaith Alliance, which was instituted shortly after the national organization was founded. Rev. Matthews retired from full-time ministry in 1998 and the Arkansas Interfaith Alliance fell into a period of dormancy. The organization was revived in 2004 by Bishop Larry Maize, Rabbi Gene Levy, and Rev. Steven Copley. Since that time the Arkansas Interfaith Alliance has implemented education and advocacy strategies on a variety of issues including the independence of the judiciary, heating assistance for the poor, tax justice, raising the minimum wage, opposition to housing and employment discrimination on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation, opposition to any constitutional amendment prohibiting same-sex marriage or civil unions, legislation requiring hospital emergency rooms to inform rape victims of the availability of medication to prevent pregnancy, and opposition to teaching creationism in public school science classrooms. In addition, the Arkansas Interfaith Alliance has provided a point of connection for supporters and interfaith leaders from across Arkansas.
