Happy Black History Month!

Over the last few years, I have dedicated time and effort to educate myself and to unlearn what my white privilege might have led me to believe or understand. I have learned that so many things we use everyday were created by Black people. I have learned that many figures of speech or common sayings are deeply rooted in racism. I have learned the significance of Black hairstyles and how they played a role in communication and the ability to preserve Black culture. I have come to understand micro aggressions. I have learned stories of love and joy and community. I have found Black artists and creators that are amazing. I have been included in conversations that have been life changing. I know when something is not for me, even if I think it’s super cool or beautiful. I know that I can stand in support but not to add my two cents. I stand up and call out racism even if it makes white people uncomfortable. Even if it makes me the target.
I did not start this project because I was racist or didn’t have Black people in my life. I did so that I could stand ten toes down for those that were targeted and marginalized. Not because I have the answers or the power to fix the systemic racism that is in every facet of our country. I wanted to have knowledge of real history so that I could fully see my white privilege and all that it provides me. When we know exactly who we are and what this country was built on and by whom, then we can truly work towards equality and freedom for ALL. If you look like me, I encourage you to do this work.
