FAREWELL TO ARMS

He was the first of our veterans to receive an American Flag eye as a gift from our clinic years ago and so began a wonderful tradition that has created many more for our deserving Vets.

It is a tradition that honors our Veterans with a special eye prosthesis that symbolizes their love for their country, our country, or the insignia of the military Branch that they served.

He was 93 when his took his last breath, asking the nurses at his facility just the night before to please keep his flag eye in a safe place.

His wife believed that he wanted his “special eye” to be given to his family to cherish as he did before he left this world.

April 11’1926 to July 8’ 2019

Cancer is hard - but creating new facial anatomy such as a nose prosthesis with internal sinus retention brings patients a sense of normalcy after a long and painful journey. Internal sinus prosthesis also stabilizes the tissue from migration and airway closure.

Always a joy to give back to these brave souls and work with the many brilliant surgeons that entrust these folks into our care.

December is a month filled with wonderful celebrations, family gatherings, incredible feasts and stories shared that warms the hearts of many.

This is just one told to us by an amazing man, a patient of ours that we love and admire.

He told us this.

He wore his American flag eye prosthesis proudly in honor of December 7th, 1941, Pearl Harbor day.

All the residents of the nursing home he resided in rallied around him, a proud Navy veteran, to shake his hand, salute him and marvel at his patriotic ocular prosthesis as he entered the dining hall - the room was packed.

From the far corner of the room, a small voice rose above the clamor and started to sing the Star Spangled Banner, in perfect pitch and with beautiful sound and clarity.

She was one of his neighbors that rarely, if ever, spoke; someone who always remained quiet and to herself. She always sat with her head down, covered with a hat to shield her face, but this day her voice touched every corner of the room, every heart present and especially the veterans among them.

It was truly a sound to behold, a song to remember. The room stood in awe as the enormity of the event sunk in.

One quiet soul, moved enough by the american flag worn by one of our patients, that she let her voice be heard, not only for her neighbors but for all Americans.

Truly a Christmas gift
