I have been able to spend a little “extra” time with the F4 (Trauma Progressive) team this week and I have to give them a shout-out (a few of them pictured here). Not only are they transitioning 12 of their beds to ICU level care (no small feat), preparing to onboard 11 new grad RNs in the next couple of months (exciting but a big responsibility), and delivering top-notch patient care, but they are doing it all the while dealing with the weaponization of social media.
I typically stick to recognition and celebratory posts, but I just have to say something about how tired I am of seeing those who are doing their very best to provide safe, compassionate care being on the receiving end of workplace violence from the very people they are trying to care for. If you are not a healthcare worker and are stunned by this thought, you don’t have to look far to find all kinds of credible information about the state of the issue. https://www.who.int/activities/preventing-violence-against-health-workers
Americans continue to rank nurses as highly ethical and honest and the most trusted profession (like 23 years in a row- checkout Gallup). Despite this, nurses and other healthcare team members are losing trust, questioning their safety and whether or not to even stay in the profession.
Admittedly, I sometimes have to fight the feeling of helplessness myself, but I can spend just a few minutes in any of our patient care areas and am quickly reminded that too much is at stake for our teams and our patients and giving up is simply not an option.
Thank you UAMS Nurses and Team UAMS for inspiring, motivating and being a reason “why” for me every day.
