UAMS Acute Care Surgery

UAMS Acute Care Surgery The Trauma Center is staffed by the faculty of the UAMS Department of Surgery, Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care.

The UAMS Medical Center serves as a tertiary referral center for critically injured adult patients, admitting more than 2,800 patients with traumatic injuries each year. All division members are involved in teaching, research and administrative activities. This highly dedicated surgical faculty, together with closely supervised senior and junior general surgery residents, provide around-the-clock coverage, to save Arkansas’ most critically injured patients. The Surgical Critical Care team is an interdisciplinary team of experts providing state of the art advanced tertiary medical care to critically ill and injured adult patients admitted to UAMS’s 24 bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Providing optimal care of the surgical critical care patient requires both the broad range of specialists available at UAMS, as well as the resources of a tertiary referral center.

Big congratulations to on receiving the Superior Trauma Assessment and Recovery (STAR) Award ⭐️

Lance exemplifies what trauma care should look like — steady under pressure, clinically sharp, and deeply compassionate with patients and families during some of their hardest moments. His ability to rapidly assess, anticipate needs, and coordinate care makes a real difference at the bedside and across the team.

Well deserved, Lance. Thank you for the impact you make every day. 👏

It is time to get blood out to pre-hospital providers. It will save lives. Daily.

Things were dire for Katie McClanahan after a tree fell on her last April — so dire that many on the scene thought she might not survive.

Today’s General Surgery Grand Rounds was unlike any other. Instead of lectures and slides, we heard directly from former patients — brave individuals who returned not for care, but to share their stories of recovery, resilience, and gratitude.

They spoke about fear, hope, healing… and the team who stood with them through every step. Hearing their journeys reminded us why we do what we do.

We listened. We remembered.
And we were inspired all over again.

To our patients who came back to share their experiences — thank you. Your words fuel our purpose and reignite our passion for surgical care and recovery.

This is more than medicine.
This is human connection.
This is gratitude in action.

Today , a powerful story took center stage. Surrounded by and crews, legislators, our Trauma Team, UAMS leadership, family, and friends, one survivor shared how a blood transfusion given in the field saved her life.

Because that blood was available on scene, made it to the hospital alive. Now, she’s using her second chance to advocate for statewide policy change—so every first responder has the ability to provide prehospital blood when minutes matter most.

We are honored to stand beside her and all our partners pushing for legislation that strengthens trauma care and saves lives before patients ever reach our doors.
Blood saves lives. Access saves even more.
