We enjoyed being part of the last class and graduation from the NYIT Delta Population Health Institute Maternal Health outreach program in Marvell (Phillips county) last week. 🤱🏾🤰🏾

Hosted at Marvell-Elaine School District High School, we spent the day learning about milestones for babies, good nutrition, the importance of sleep, and more! 👶🏾Since checking in on one’s mental and emotional health are important parts of overall health, especially during pregnancy, a therapist was on site to provide education and answer questions. 🙋🏾

Champ the Dog even made a special appearance to the delight of the kiddos (and some of the parents) in attendance!🐶

Partnerships like this one go a long way in helping to improve maternal health outcomes. Thank you, Dr. Brookshield Laurent, Director Tiffny Frazier Calloway, and the entire NYIT Delta Population Health Institute team and student doctors for this important partnership. 🫱🏾‍🫲🏽

We 💜 pouring into students! Last week we travelled to the UAMS northwest Arkansas regional campus in Fayetteville to speak to young scholars about how data can be used as a tool to improve health and health outcomes in communities. 📊🩹🩺

We also provided a tour of the mobile health unit to demonstrate to the young scholars the importance of being mobile in a rural state like Arkansas.

Thank you, Nick Pettus, Taiquitha Robins and the entire UAMS team for this opportunity!

Day 2 of Camp iCAN! We learned about nutrition education and careers in public safety and the importance of physical activity. We were excited to take a field trip to the Delta Rivers Nature Center in Pine Bluff.

We learned about the importance of getting outside in nature and how nature helps us to be healthy. We also learned about wild mushrooms from our instructor and used clay to make our own version of wild mushrooms. Even camp director, Mr. Courtney Cadillac Simmons got in on the fun and tried to make a mushroom! 🍄

Thank you, Mr. Clinton Le'Roy Coleman and the Delta River Nature Center staff. You all ROCK!

💦 Stay safe around water this summer! Swimming is a fun way to cool off, but it’s important to stay safe around pools and open water. Drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children ages 1-4. It can happen in seconds, often silently, even when kids aren't supposed to be swimming.

Keep your family safe with these must-know tips:
👀 Active supervision is key. Always watch kids near water, even if it’s a small amount of water.
👙 Blue and green swimsuits blend in. Dress your child in bright, contrasting colors like red, pink, or orange so you can easily see them under water!
🏊🏾‍♀️ Teach kids to never swim alone, no matter their skill level.
🛟 Learn CPR. It could mean the difference between life and death.

Camp iCAN! is our 3-day summer day camp we host all around the state for kiddos ages 9-12. We partnered with Hurricane HYPE Center in Pine Bluff to host 23 campers this year. 🛝

After we finished with our nutrition education on Day 1, we were honored to hear from former NFL standout and founder of the non-profit Pettus Foundation, Kris Pettus. He talked about his amazing career and how he learned the importance of academics, focus in the classroom and on the football field and the importance of community service. 🏈He even stuck around to play a round of kickball and other games with our campers. 🏐Thank you, Mr. Kris. You ROCK! 👏🏾

Arkansas Minority Health Commission: Your Health. Our Priority.

At the Arkansas Minority Health Commission, our goal is to be a catalyst in bridging the gap in the health status of the minority population and that of the majority population in Arkansas. To accomplish this, the commission focuses on addressing existing disparities in minority communities, educating these communities on healthier lifestyles, promoting awareness of services and accessibility within our health care system, and making recommendations to relevant agencies, the Governor and to the state legislature.
