Just this month, the International Academy of Oral Medicine & Toxicology (IAOMT) and Dental Amalgam Mercury Solutions (DAMS) jointly filed a petition urging the FDA to ban mercury fillings in the US.

The arguments presented in the petition are comprehensive, all stemming from the fact that mercury is a bio-accumulative neurotoxin and dental amalgam, which is about 50% mercury by weight, is the most common source of exposure for many Americans.
According to the petition, more than 122 million Americans currently have these toxic “silver” fillings, with a few populations bearing a disproportionate burden. Those whose dentistry is paid for by government programs – including seniors, military members, and veterans – are most likely to get mercury fillings simply because they’re the cheapest option available.

The petition argues that, without a ban, we’re essentially forcing some of our most vulnerable citizens to accept the most toxic dental material without meaningful choice.
