Many people know that diabetes can affect vision or circulation in the feet, but fewer realize it can also affect hearing 👂 and balance ⚖️. Diabetes can damage the small blood vessels and nerves that support the inner ear, which may lead to hearing loss, ringing in the ears, or feelings of unsteadiness.

Because the same nerve helps control both hearing and balance, it is common for people with diabetes to notice changes in both areas. Peripheral neuropathy can cause numbness or weakness in the feet, increasing the risk of falls. If you have diabetes, regular hearing and balance screenings are an important part of caring for your whole body, not just managing blood sugar.

I love the “set it and forget it” idea… but hearing aids just don’t work that way. 😅

Many people think once you’re fitted with a hearing aid, you’re good for years. In reality, your hearing can change, your daily environments can change (quiet home vs. busy restaurants), and your brain needs consistent, comfortable access to sound to process speech efficiently.

We hear this all the time: “I love them at home… but restaurants are overwhelming. Can you help me with that?” And that’s exactly where follow-up care shines! 🙌

A quick check-in lets us fine-tune settings and features to better match your real life, so you’re not working so hard just to keep up.

Where do you struggle the most: restaurants, family gatherings, the car, or TV? 👂

It might feel surprising, but your heart ❤️ and your ears 👂 are closely connected.

The inner ear relies on healthy blood flow to function properly, and even small changes in circulation can affect how well you hear. When blood flow is reduced, the delicate structures in the inner ear may not get the oxygen and nutrients they need.

Research has shown an association between cardiovascular disease and hearing loss, including conditions like heart disease and peripheral artery disease. If you have heart-related concerns and have noticed changes in your hearing or ringing in your ears, it may be time to have your hearing checked.

Just like your cardiologist monitors your heart, we can monitor your hearing over time and help you stay proactive with your overall health!

Maximize Brain Power 🧠👂

Did you know that using hearing aids does more than improve hearing? Studies show they increase brain activity in areas related to language and auditory processing, keeping your mind sharp while you enjoy conversations.

💡 Tip: Wear your hearing aids consistently, especially in social settings or while listening to media. The more your brain engages, the more you can strengthen auditory pathways and enjoy richer connections with the people around you.

“I can just manage the way I always have.” 🤨

Many people believe they can continue managing their hearing loss by turning up the television, asking others to repeat themselves, or avoiding certain social situations altogether. Over time, these adjustments can quietly limit where you go and how you engage with the world around you.

A helpful reminder is that hearing aids are customized to your specific hearing needs. When properly programmed and supported, they can help reduce listening effort and improve clarity in areas that once felt overwhelming. You should not have to give up restaurants, social gatherings, or meaningful activities because of hearing difficulties. 🙌

Rechargeable or Traditional? 🔋🎧

Choosing the right battery for your hearing aids can make your life much easier. Rechargeable hearing aids are convenient for everyday streaming, calls, and audiobooks, while traditional batteries can be handy for travel or backup situations.

💡 Tip: Think about your lifestyle. If you love connecting via phone or apps, a rechargeable device may simplify your routine. If you’re on the go or off the grid, traditional batteries could be better. Ask your hearing care provider to help you find the perfect fit for your hearing and habits.

One of the biggest myths I hear is: “If you have ringing in your ears, you just have to live with it.”

Here’s the truth: tinnitus is common, and while we can’t always “turn it off,” we can help turn down how much it takes up space in your day.

I’m Brenda, and one of my favorite parts of what I do is helping people put words to something that can feel really hard to explain. Tinnitus can be exhausting, especially when it’s quiet, and your brain won’t “turn it down.”

If you’re feeling frustrated, worried, or exhausted, you’re not alone. Many people wait to bring it up because they assume nothing can be done. 🫶

We’ll take it step by step: we’ll talk through what you’re noticing, check your hearing, and build a plan that feels realistic and manageable, so you can get back to focusing on life instead of the ringing. 🧩

🌟 One thing I’ve learned in audiology is that hearing loss doesn’t just change how someone hears, it can shape how you move through the world. Not because it’s easy, but because it often builds resilience, self-advocacy, and a determination you can’t teach in a classroom.

I wanted to share an article about Ava Pruden, a 17‑year‑old swimmer who embodies exactly that!

Ava was diagnosed with significant hearing loss as an infant, yet she grew into an award‑winning athlete who competes on the world stage. She talks openly about how her hearing loss made school transitions harder, how she had to learn to speak up for what she needed, and how those challenges ultimately made her stronger.

That mindset is something I see so often in my own patients, the way hearing loss shapes confidence, identity, and grit.

What struck me most was how Ava uses her experience to create change. She adapts in the pool with visual cues, she brings ideas back from the Deaflympics to improve accessibility for her team, and she’s already thinking about how to advocate for others. 🏊🏻‍♀️ She even wants to become a pediatric audiologist so she can support kids who are walking a path similar to hers!

As an audiologist, I find stories like hers meaningful!

Ava’s story is inspiring, but it’s also familiar. I see versions of it every week. And it’s one of the reasons I love what I do. 🥰💞

Spring Refresh 🌷👂

Spring isn’t just for cleaning your home. Your hearing aids deserve a little love, too! Dust, moisture, and wax buildup can affect sound quality, so regular cleaning is key.

💡 Tip: Wipe your hearing aids daily with a soft cloth and use your cleaning brush or wax pick to remove debris. Schedule a professional tune-up a few times a year to keep everything working perfectly. A little spring refresh goes a long way for clearer hearing!
