In honor of National Speech-Language-Hearing month, our speech language pathologists have created a series on the many benefits of reading.

In part 1 we are going to talk about the language development that can occur from reading to your child on a consistent basis. Have you ever heard the saying “children are like sponges”? That has never been more true than it is right now, as we see first hand the benefits from reading out loud to children. A child will learn on average 3.5 words per day from the ages of 1-5. Books are a great resource to provide them a variety of different language structure and vocabulary that they may not hear in daily conversations.

But don’t just listen to us, give it a try and see first hand the many benefits reading out loud can have for you and your children.

If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s language skills, please call and set up a FREE 15 minute consultation with one of our amazing therapists

In this next series we are going to go over ‘Executive Function’ and what it looks like for different age populations.

Executive function is a set of skills that improves ones ability to focus on a task and adjust to a changing environment. The concept can be split into the following three subsections: working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility. These skills are learned and developed in early childhood. Children with various different diagnoses (ex. Autism, ADHD, Down syndrome, Depression / Anxiety) may have difficulty developing these skills independently. They will requiring intentional high repetition practice to develop the necessary strategies for social engagement. It is critical for them to to be placed in different scenarios that cause them to experience a variety of different environmental stimuli. Through this exposure, they will learn how to respond and adapt to these experiences.

At Blue Horizon Therapy, our therapists are trained in a variety of different techniques that are used to build these skills in children. Specifically, our occupational therapists will work on a child’s ability to have “flexible thinking” and use their working memory to develop a plan to navigate different scenarios that occur in a typical day.

If you are concerned about your child’s ability to easily adapt to changes in their environment both emotionally and physically, please call and set up a FREE 15 minute consultation with one of our amazing therapists.

Last week we talked about expressive language and how it is often referred to as “spoken language”. Today we are going to talk about receptive language.

Receptive language is a child’s ability to listen and comprehend spoken and written word. Both of these skills are critical for a child to have so that they can understand the world around them and effectively communicate their thoughts and feelings. It is often simplified down to “listening” but in reality it requires a lot more skills to be successful. In order to fully comprehend others a child must understand sounds and words; movement and gestures; and signs and symbols. A few skills that a speech language pathologist may focus on are: following simple to multistep directions, understanding comprehension questions (who, what, when, where, how), and inferring / making predictions based on a picture or story

If you are concerned about your child’s ability to use receptive and expressive language, please call and set up a FREE 15 minute consultation with one of our amazing therapists.

Effective communication requires both expressive and receptive language skills. Today we will be talking about Expressive language, which refers to a child’s ability to use words and or gestures to communicate with others about their wants, needs, and ideas. It is often simplified down to “spoken language” but in reality it is much more complex. People can use a variety of different forms of communication when interacting with others; a few of those include sign language, a picture exchange system, the use of a speech-generating device, and writing. Based on a child’s medical condition, they might not be able to use spoken word, but a speech language pathologist will be able to teach them a variety of different ways to successfully communicate with others.

If you are concerned about your child’s ability to use receptive and expressive language, please call and set up a FREE 15 minute consultation with one of our amazing therapists.
