Did you know your breathing affects your smile? 😊

Chronic mouth breathing = dry mouth = bacteria party = bad breath & gum disease.

Quick check: How are you breathing right now? Through your nose or mouth?

Most of us mouth breathe way more than we realize, especially when stressed or focused.

Sometimes it's not as simple as "just close your mouth." When breathing mechanics are off, your body defaults to mouth breathing because it feels easier.

The good news? Your breathing patterns are trainable.

👃💨 Want fresher breath and healthier gums? Start with your breath, not just your toothbrush.

Questions about your breathing patterns? Send me a message.

Is your breath working for you or against you, keeping you stuck??

Your breathing pattern sends constant messages to your nervous system:
• Hold your breath when stressed = "I'm in danger"
• Shallow, fast breathing = "Stay on high alert"
• Slow, steady nose breathing = "I'm safe and calm"

The result? Your body responds accordingly.

Dysfunctional breathing → anxiety, fatigue, poor focus, chronic pain
Functional breathing → mental clarity, stable energy, calm nervous system

Try this now: Slow breath in through your nose, belly expands. Slow exhale through nose, belly draws in.

Notice the shift? That's your nervous system responding.

👉 Comment "YES" if you're ready to make your breath work for you.

It’s all in the exhale.

Your exhalation tells a story about your health.

In a functional breath, the exhale is smooth, slow, and relaxing. It’s not forced or tense. It feels easeful.

Start paying attention to your own breath.

If your exhale is short, held, or tight, gently work to soften it. Let it lengthen while staying relaxed. When your exhale shifts, your inhale naturally follows.

This is one of my favorite areas to coach. Helping clients reconnect with their breath changes how they feel, move, and heal.

Why does breathing matter for movement?
Because every system in your body depends on it.

When you improve your breathing, you improve your movement. Functional breathing supports stability, strength, and coordination — the foundation of pain-free movement.

When you’re in pain, your body automatically changes the way you breathe to protect itself. But if that altered pattern sticks around, it can lead to poor performance and slower healing.

A functional breathing coach helps you retrain your breath to move better, heal faster, and restore balance.

You wouldn’t try to eat through your nose…

So why are you breathing through your mouth?

The mouth is designed for eating and speaking. The nose is designed for breathing. When you breathe through your nose, your body works the way it was built to.

Nasal breathing helps to:
• Warm, moisten, and filter the air
• Improve diaphragm function
• Boost oxygen uptake in your blood
• Release nitric oxide (a natural vasodilator)
• Prevent over-breathing and stress
• Lower the risk of snoring and sleep apnea
• Prevent dry mouth and gum disease

Are you resting your tongue in the right spot?

It matters more than you think.

Resting your tongue on the roof of your mouth helps support nasal breathing, a key part of healthy, functional breathing. For years, people were taught to rest the tongue at the bottom of the mouth. But research shows it’s more effective to let it rest in its natural “parking spot” just behind the front teeth.

This small shift helps support the nasal cavity and improve how you breathe throughout the day.=

What is functional breathing?

Functional breathing is the foundation of better health. It’s about learning to breathe efficiently, all day, every day.

Many people don’t realize that symptoms like poor sleep, anxiety, allergies, congestion, and even brain fog can be linked to dysfunctional breathing patterns. When your breath is off, everything else can feel off too.

In a functional breathing session, you’ll improve both the chemical and mechanical aspects of your breath. Sessions are available in person in Fraser and Littleton, Colorado, as well as virtually.

Hip pain? It might be a sign of imbalance, not injury.

Outer hip pain, groin tension, or even knee discomfort can all stem from a dysfunctional relationship between the muscles that stabilize your hip.

One simple way to retrain function is through a kneeling lunge. By keeping the kneeling leg upright, you cue your inner and outer hip muscles to work together. This builds balance and reduces compensation.

This is a common dysfunction I see in clients, and the fix is often simpler than you’d expect.

Tight hamstrings? The problem might not be your hamstrings at all.

Often, tight muscles are a protective response—not the root issue. Your hamstrings may be gripping to compensate for poor core stability or deeper imbalances.

Instead of overstretching, focus on strengthening your core and improving movement patterns. That’s the real path to release and relief.

Want to understand what your body is trying to tell you? Let’s assess what’s really going on.
