A few weeks ago I could not sleep due to an achy back. I also could not lie on my side, and I'm a side sleeper!

Guess what worked.. acupuncture. :) Turns out I had some trigger points in my piriformis muscle, which "referred" pain to my back and hips.

I also know that REGULAR acupuncture (at least 1x per month) is key, as is DAILY MOVEMENT.

In other words, a weekly yoga class and acupuncture "only when there is pain" won't cut it.. playing "catch up" won't help with the gradual decline.

I found a great article that lists most of the "stretches" and exercises I recommend.. mix these into your daily routine!

Remember to gently stretch your piriformis muscle to keep sciatic pain at bay.

I also have a free Facebook group for women between 40ish and 60ish. It's a fun group.. we have a BLAST. This, to me, is what HOLISTIC really means. Not just about the didactic science. Health is about full engagement with your mind, body, and soul.

This is a busy week for me. Today, Wednesday, I'll be giving a talk at the Natural Grocer's on Kipling and Coal Mine in Lakewood, Colorado at 5:30. Tomorrow, (Thursday) I'll be giving the same talk at Mission Trace, same time!

It's about reducing your toxic load with personal care, cleaning products, and cosmetics. I'll show you how to make sense of the industry practices, the politics, and regulations (national and international) as well as some science so you can make your own informed decisions.

This book rocks. I just discovered it!

"Aging well" is a passion of mine and this woman just NAILED it. I have written some smaller books and a TON of blogs and maybe one day I'll come up with something this brilliant for a full-length book.

I'm also into a combination of down-to-earth, practical, functional medicine and "woo-woo" if you want to call it that.

Over the last decade or so.. having done extreme sports, studied martial arts, practiced acupuncture, built a business, both local and online.. wow. I have been on that freaking roller-coaster ride. I could honestly say that I would be an utter FOOL to deny the power of what some would call "woo-woo." Practical woo-woo. Sounds like a good book title!

How do you achieve epic goals AND keep your health and sanity at the same time?

Never thought I would see the day in which I would write a blog about weight loss, but here it is. It's the real deal.. no quick fixes. The things that are usually missing from most "weight loss" articles and blogs.

My motto is LIFE IS SHORT.

That means.. stop waiting. Stop waiting until:

The kids are back in school

My out of town guests leave

When "life settles down" and I "Have a routine"

When I have more energy

When I lose 10 lbs

When I have more money.

No. TODAY.

Things are never going to just get easy, and the best time to work on long-range goals isn't just when it's convenient.

Spend at least one hour each day. For me, it's mornings.. working on your weekly plans.

Spend a few hours EACH WEEK working towards your long-range goal. This is how we MAKE things happen.

Need an example? Ok. I want to write for the Huffington Post. I reflect and mediate every morning, or read about how to get accepted as a writer.

And each week I make sure I take action towards that goal.

Now, think about what you want to do for this week, this month, and this year. Because Life is short and goes by DAMN fast. Make sure you make room for what you LOVE.

One of the things I do is integrate acupuncture, Chinese medicine, and educational programs that people can do at home (Videos, guides, handouts, worksheets, homework, coaching groups, etc.) which greatly enhances success.

Here's something from one of my Hormone Reset clients/patients:

I have some patients that do some pretty cool things.. like rock climbing and drumming. We go DEEP to get to the root cause of their pain.. so they can KEEP doing the things they LOVE, for a long time to come!

Elbow pain isn't always what we think it is. It is often self-diagnosed and improperly addressed. Fortunately, it is NOT difficult to treat with the right approach.

I got inspired by Katie Bowman's podcasts about feet and biomechanics. (I'm a nerd, too) and she said something that really struck me:

That this whole "fitness and wellness thing" doesn't have to be so heavy or a chore. Studying it and practicing it can be a "Happy-making thing."

I encourage you this week, to think about ways to make it all a little more fun. Read a book about fitness and apply it to your "laboratory of life." Do some barefoot yoga on the grass, do a playground workout, go for a hike or swim. Don't worry about results, just simply enjoy! It's summer!!
