I had the pleasure of working with Laura when I lived in Kentucky. Please go check out this podcast, if you want to learn from some amazing humans!
As promised, the podcast is back!
Which also means...
$5 CEUs courses are back!!!!!
My SLP daughter Macy is joining me and we start this new season with a great question from an SLP for our first show.
Before we get to specific content, let's review our format so you'll know what to expect...
Watch from my YouTube channel or teachmetotalk.com - the link is below for this first episode
Each video is 30 minutes to 1 hour
Click the link in the post or at teachmetotalk.com to sign up for CE credit for $5 which also includes a one-page pdf summary or the "show notes." The notes are a great handout to share with parents or teams
SLPs -- as an ASHA provider, we submit your credits to ASHA for you! Lots of SLPs who offer courses have stopped providing this service, but we're still going strong!
A new episode will be uploaded every Monday morning
Beginning today!
In this first show, we're tackling a question from an SLP that sounds sooooo familiar.
Has this happened to you?
I am a speech therapist and I’m getting back into early intervention after several years staying home with my kids. Your podcasts are EXTREMELY helpful and I’m re-learning so much, and also learning things for the first time that I wasn’t taught in grad school. I have a little friend on my caseload who has several flags for autism and I have been trying to get him to engage in social games with me. So far I haven’t been successful and I wondered if you had any tips on how to get these going. He loves to be chased and tickled so I turn that into a social game, but he won’t sit on my lap or on the floor next to me for some of the games I like to use. It’s also hard to get him to calm down after chasing/tickling. He does like to get toys out of my bag so sometimes that works. Another thing I would love advice about is dealing with his screaming and throwing himself on the floor when he doesn’t get what he wants. For example, toward the end of our sessions he almost always wants to go outside. His mom tells him they will but they have to wait until I leave (I’m usually writing my note at this point). Or, when we have to clean up one toy before playing with another he does this behavior. Thank you for reading this message. I look forward to hearing back from you!
Watch or listen below as we dive in and unpack solutions so you can learn to:
✅ Turn high-energy play like chasing and tickling into meaningful engagement
✅ Support regulation and transitions between active and calm play
✅ Encourage participation when a child resists lap games or sitting activities
✅ Handle meltdowns and screaming when routines or favorite activities are delayed
✅ Use simple, connection-based strategies that build engagement and language
We are having soooo much fun doing the podcast together! It's very casual and conversational but filled with nuggets to make your job as a parent working with your own child or a professional with a whole caseload full of little friends much easier.
I hope the SLP's question for today's podcast will inspire you to email us your own challenges and let us offer recommendations for what we would try. Send them to me at Laura@teachmetotalk.com with PODCAST QUESTION in the subject line.
