October is National Physical Therapy month !
Being a physical therapist for 18 years, today I want to talk about an occurrence that pains me deeply. It is the lack of fitness in the Indian diaspora especially in the advancing age group.
Compared to their counterparts in many (not all) parts of the world, many of us Indians are a sedentary lot. Fitness is the last rung on the ladder of our priorities, if at all. Just the other day, a patient of mine spoke of her 92 year old mother who swims daily. I find it extremely hard to digest that many of our sexagenarians are not able to even walk briskly for half an hour, especially women. Not only that, I see many of my friends in their forties who since Covid struck, have become overweight, have hypertension, diabetes, hormonal issues, depression and the likes. And a common factor here is the lack of "commitment" to regular exercise.
Now this is where physical therapy can help navigate your journey to fitness. There is a popular notion that physical therapy is only required if you are in pain or have had surgery. False. A physical therapist can evaluate you for strength, flexibility, mobility, balance and work on the deficits to avert the rapid decline in function with age. With families being increasingly nuclear, being fit and healthy can enable you to enjoy longevity.
With this goal of promoting fitness and an active way of life, especially with advancing age, I launched Belle Vie Healthcare.
If you have noticed your parents/grandparents starting to have difficulty getting out of bed/chair/car, negotiating stairs, getting on/off the curb or have declined in walking speed/distance, have unstable balance then physical therapy can help nip it in the bud before it turns into a dependency on walker/wheelchair or even worse a fall/fracture.
Belle Vie Healthcare provides in-home evaluation and customized treatment to address an individual's specific deficits and needs.
