June 22 was World Vestibular Schwannoma Day! 🎗️

Raising awareness about vestibular schwannoma, also known as acoustic neuroma, a rare non-cancerous tumor that affects the balance and hearing nerves. Early detection and treatment are crucial for managing this condition effectively. Large vestibular schwannomas that compress the brainstem (Koos grade 4) remain challenging lesions to treat surgically. We continue to raise the bar with radical near total and gross total resections of Koos grade 4 vestibular schwannomas with greater than 95% excellent facial nerve outcomes (HB 1-2). Here are some examples of some large tumors treated these past month with normal facial nerve outcomes.

Thrilled to have been an invited speaker at the 1st ADNeuro 2024, Abu Dhabi International Brain and Spine Congress, and 1st Neurosurgical Symposium at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC). Connecting with numerous esteemed colleagues and forging new relationships. I had the privilege to share my insights on parietal interhemispheric transtentorial approach to the pineal region, combined petrosal approaches, and complex AVM surgery. My heartfelt gratitude goes to Kaith Almefty, Shawn Stevens, and Michael Lawton for this opportunity to share my latest work in skull base surgery, engage in enriching discussions, and learn from fellow experts. April 8 is World Neurosurgeon’s Day and also Cushing’s Disease Awareness Day, celebrating the birthday of Dr. Harvey Cushing, the father of neurosurgery who first described Cushing’s Disease. I’m very grateful to be a neurosurgeon and feel very humbled and honored to be in a position to help patients who suffer from Cushing’s disease. I have wanted be a doctor more than anything in the world for as far as I can remember. No matter how hard I tried to look into other career paths, I was continually drawn to medicine like a tractor beam. All the sacrifices made to get here....sleepless nights spent studying for entrance exams, answering pages in the middle of the night, dropping everything in your personal life at a moment’s notice to come in for an emergency life-saving surgery....this is the call of duty. This is our calling. And I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I feel very incredibly blessed for this honor and privilege to be a doctor, to be a neurosurgeon, to make a difference in this world.

Grateful for all my former teachers who have invested their time in mentoring me, my current colleagues, residents and medical students who continue to sharpen me and push me to advance my knowledge and skills, and to all my patients who entrust their lives to us and continue to help us understand their neurological conditions so that we can better care for them.

To all my physician friends and colleagues, I salute you and wish you all a Happy National Doctor’s Day. Continue to live the dream.
