For those people who are considering Gastric Bypass surgery please make sure to tell your surgeons about any extended release medications you are taking. Gastric Bypass surgery prevents your body absorbing extended release medication properly so it is likely you will need to adjust your medications.

I want to apologize for being absent from the page for a while. It is my hope that I can be more active on the page in order to be more helpful to the community of bariatric patients.

In conducting evaluations over the last 12 years and working in a number of capacities with the bariatric commmunity one of the most consistent things is the cycle of blame people get into regarding being overweight. It is important to remember that being overweight is due to a complex structure of factors such as genetics, health conditions, medications that you may/or have taken, dieting history, and life circumstances (family, work, etc). While we have to hold some accountability for our weight struggles there are a number of factors that are at play, that are not your fault. It is hard to go against the messaging that it is "all your fault" however, it is not. If you can get past this message (I know it's easier said than done) your journey to successful weight management will be a lot easier.

One of the things I come up against the most during my work is when people feel that what they are experiencing is only happening to them. They often feel that this somehow makes them unique (and not in a good way) or that they are doing something wrong that no one else is doing.

This is especially true when people describe their weight struggles. They share that they are only able to lose 20lbs at a time through a diet and then regain most if not all of it back. They believe they are d**g something wrong that no one else is.

Please remember if it is happening to you it is happening to others and it is not your fault.

Here are my top 3 things that I have found weight loss patients have in common when they are successful.

Got asked this week "what is a support system?" My answer is that a support system is anything that you have that helps you achieve your goal. The best support systems are large, diverse, and provide lots of options. Remember, support systems are never complete and are always growing.

I am seeing more and more people who’s weight gain started after having a hysterectomy but were not warned by doctors that weight gain is a common side effect of the procedure.

This causes people to feel very confused when they gain weight after the procedure even though they have changed nothing about the way they eat and don’t know to connect the two together. This more often than not leads to frustration and blaming themselves.

If you have had a hysterectomy and gained weight after, remember it is not your fault. You can make adjustments to lessen the impact but if you are not informed of the problem you can’t make the adjustments.

Please share if you know someone who has had the same issue. Often times medical treatments mess up the way the body works and has an impact on weight gain. It is important to break the cycle of assuming every time a person gains weight it is 100% their fault.

I was doing an evaluation on someone who felt they had failed because they were needing a revision to their first surgery after over 10 years. They also questioned their ability to be successful with the second surgery. When I explored their first surgery with them, they said they lost 200lbs and was able have children but felt they failed because they regained weight after having children. I would count this as success and believe this points to success with the second procedure.

Unfortunately, when we are on the hamster wheel that is losing weight we are programmed to expect failure and not see success when it happens. Make sure you recognize the successes and the achievement of goals when they happen.
