Thank you to our latest Daisy Honoree, two-time honoree, Laura Tunnero, RN, Coronary Care Unit, whose ability to provide support and compassion creates an environment where her patients and their families feel valued and cared for during uncertain and often scary times.

“I was in bad shape. I had a raging UTI, kidney stones, a 105-degree fever, and was in septic shock, and I wasn't close to home - l was visiting my sister from out of state. I was very sick and very scared. That is, until Laura came to the rescue. Somehow, the second she said, ‘Hi, I'm your nurse, Laura,’ l knew I was in caring, capable hands. I was right. Laura didn't just take care of me during my four days in the CCU, she cared about me. She made sure I was as comfortable as possible, changed my sheets and gown, adjusted me in the bed as needed (often, as l kept slipping down), and helped me with hygiene with dignity. Of course, she managed all of my medical needs as well, which were vast.

In addition, Laura was a bright light, amazing to talk to, had a great sense of humor, and was very reassuring when I was seeking answers. My entire family all loved Laura as much as I did. She was such a comfort to them. I endured a trauma, but so did everyone who loves me. She was there for us all. I had lots of wonderful nurses and doctors at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, but Laura stood out. I'll never forget her. I can't say I'll miss my days in the hospital, but I already miss my extraordinary nurse.”

“I wasn’t just another patient, but a person whose future mattered. I can dream again, plan again, and live again.” - Joey Dichiara.

At just 22 years old, Joey has already endured more than most people experience in a lifetime. After a severe case of COVID-19 at age 17 led to multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C), she spent weeks in the intensive care unit, fighting for her life. The virus attacked multiple organs, including her kidneys, which would lead her to needing a kidney transplant.

Thanks to the dedicated team at CBMC, and the gift of life, Joey can dream, plan and live again.

Thank you to our latest Daisy Honoree, Jessica Brynildsen, RN, from our Burn Intensive Care Unit, whose actions during a code reflected the values of excellence and teamwork that define our system.

"I am always impressed and delighted by Jessica's cheery disposition and competence.

Early on during our preceptorship, Jessica was with me when one of our patients coded – a healthy individual in their 20s who suffered a massive pulmonary embolism. Jessica was the first to recognize the signs of this patient’s deterioration and immediately and effectively notified the appropriate people that the patient was decompensating. At this time, the patient had just walked into our hydrotherapy room. The ensuing code turned out to be one of the most clinically impressive experiences of my career. The patient went into asystole about 5 times over the course of an hour. During this code, the patient was clot busted and began bleeding profusely from his wounds. We stabilized the patient lines for ECMO and eventually transferred them to CTICU.

During this event, Jessica was calm, collected, and professional. With Jessica’s help and the work of the entire team, our patient eventually made a full recovery with no residuals. I don’t know if the code would have run as smoothly without her. Truly a miracle.”

Our NICU Community

Welcome to the Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) support page. Many NICU parents agree, the period following the birth of a premature infant can be a difficult time that brings with it many unique questions and concerns. That’s why we created this page, to provide SBMC NICU families with helpful information and support they need, both during and after their baby’s stay in our NICU. We encourage families to use this platform to share graduate stories of their unique experiences and act as an inspiration to those families currently in our NICU.

As a Level III Regional Perinatal Center, the NICU offers the latest treatments and modalities in the field to provide the most advanced care for more than 1,200 premature and ill newborns each year.

Mothers who are at high risk for complications during pregnancy come to Saint Barnabas Medical Center for our specialized prenatal care and take comfort in the fact that, if their baby needs special care after birth, our NICU is among the best in the country and is equipped to diagnose and treat a variety of problems.
