Ankle Injuries with Dr. Andrew Rice

Ankle injuries are common, but understanding the difference can help you recover properly.

• Sprains involve stretched or torn ligaments (often from rolling your ankle)
• Strains affect muscles or tendons
• Tendinitis is inflammation from overuse

Common symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty bearing weight. While mild injuries may improve with Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation (RICE), ongoing pain or instability could indicate a more serious issue.

Patients should consider evaluation if symptoms last more than a few days, worsen, or limit your ability to walk. Early treatment can prevent chronic instability and long-term joint problems.

Occupational Therapy Month Spotlight: Kyla Salisbury, MOTR/L, CHT

This month, we’re proud to recognize the Occupational Therapists at Livingston HealthCare and the care they bring to our community.

Kyla earned her Master of Science in Occupational Therapy in 2016 and became a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) in 2023—an advanced certification demonstrating expertise in treating conditions of the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder.

“I employ evidence-based interventions in a creative and client-centered manner for the holistic treatment of a variety of conditions for patients across the lifespan,” Kyla shares. “I value good communication between therapist and patient and a collaborative, fun approach to treatment.”

Kyla chose a career in healthcare because of the meaningful difference she can make in people’s lives—helping patients regain function, build confidence, and reach their personal wellness goals.

Motivation Isn’t the Problem — It’s the Signal
By Dr. Christopher Spromberg, Psy.D.

“I just don’t feel motivated.”

It’s something I hear often—from adults, teens, and parents. Motivation is usually treated as the core problem. But in many cases, it’s actually a signal pointing to something deeper.

Low motivation is often connected to:
• Burnout or emotional exhaustion
• Anxiety about performance or failure
• Depression and low energy
• Feeling overwhelmed or lacking structure
• Disconnection from purpose

When we focus only on “fixing motivation,” we risk missing what’s actually making action feel difficult.

Instead of asking “How do I get motivated?”
Try asking “What’s making this hard right now?”

This month, we’re proud to highlight Dr. Andrew Rice, DPM, FACFAS, and the care he provides to our community.

Dr. Rice specializes in podiatric medicine and surgery, with a focus on conditions such as sports-related injuries, stress fractures, shin splints, plantar fasciitis, bunions, and structural foot concerns. He also has experience in biomechanics and skin evaluations, including nail melanocytic lesions. His expertise in both prevention and treatment helps patients stay active, mobile, and pain-free.

Outside of the clinic, Dr. Rice enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife—flyfishing, skiing, camping, and hiking—as well as music and community involvement.

Throughout Foot Health Month, Dr. Rice will be sharing tips and insights to help you take better care of your feet and stay active all season long.

It's Occupational Therapy Month

Occupational Therapy (OT) helps people improve their ability to perform everyday activities—from getting dressed and cooking to returning to work or enjoying hobbies.

Whether recovering from an injury, managing a chronic condition, or adapting to a new challenge, OT focuses on helping you move safely, build strength, and find new ways to stay independent.

In OT, “occupation” simply means the daily tasks that are meaningful to you, because staying active in your life is what matters most.

This month, we celebrate the impact of Occupational Therapy in helping individuals live safely, confidently, and as independently as possible.
