Sleep & Your Health 😴
By Daniel Tanbakuchi, DO
Family Medicine | Livingston HealthCare Clinic

During winter months, shorter days, colder temperatures, and disrupted routines can quietly take a toll on sleep. Poor sleep isn’t just about feeling tired—it can have real impacts on your health, especially during flu season.

Ongoing sleep deprivation affects nearly every system in the body. It’s linked to increased anxiety and depression, trouble focusing, and a weakened immune system. Over time, poor sleep can also raise the risk of heart disease, metabolic issues, and ongoing mental health challenges.

Sleep plays a critical role in immune health. During deep sleep, your body produces proteins that help fight infection and regulate inflammation. When sleep is irregular or cut short, fewer immune cells are made, recovery takes longer, and you may be more vulnerable to illnesses like the flu.

Prioritizing good sleep hygiene can help protect your immune system, boost resilience, and support better energy, focus, and overall well-being.

Happy National Pharmacist Day 💊

Today we recognize the Livingston HealthCare Pharmacy team for the critical role they play in patient care across our entire hospital. Our pharmacists support every corner of LHC—from Infusion and Surgical Services to the Emergency Department and Med/Surg—ensuring medications are safe, accurate, and available when patients need them most.

We’re also excited to share that our Pharmacy Department is in the process of expanding. The updated space will include enhanced sterile and hazardous compounding areas, improved workflows, and expanded infrastructure to support new technologies and growth. These upgrades will help us meet and exceed evolving regulatory standards while strengthening medication safety for both patients and staff.

This project goes beyond a physical renovation. A modernized pharmacy means faster medication turnaround times, safer handling of complex therapies like chemotherapy, and stronger support for every service line that depends on pharmacy expertise. It’s an investment in keeping care local, protecting our caregivers, and preparing Livingston HealthCare for the future.

Thank you to our pharmacy team for your precision, dedication, and behind-the-scenes impact on patient care—today and every day.

Intentions Over Resolutions

As we move into 2026, many of us look for a fresh start. Instead of New Year’s resolutions, consider setting intentions.

Resolutions are often rigid and outcome-focused. Intentions offer flexibility, curiosity, and grace—meeting life as it is, not as we expect it to be. Intentions emphasize the process, not perfection, and they allow room to adapt, learn, and move forward without judgment.

Life rarely unfolds in straight lines, and rigid goals can feel like shackles when circumstances shift. Intentions, however, are like open doors—they invite us to walk through, explore, and adjust as needed.

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month 🩵

Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the cells of the cervix and is most often caused by long-term infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). The good news? Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers with regular screening and vaccination.

Routine Pap tests and HPV screenings can detect changes early—often before cancer develops. The HPV vaccine is also a powerful tool in preventing cervical cancer and is recommended for adolescents and young adults.

Taking care of your cervical health means staying up to date on screenings, knowing your risk factors, and talking openly with your provider about any concerns. Early detection saves lives, and prevention starts with awareness.

Car Seat Safety and Winter Clothing Tips
Information provided by LHC’s Trauma Coordinator, Jenn Schmid, RN, CFRN, CEN

Ensuring children are properly secured in their car seats is essential, especially during cold weather.

Keep these guidelines in mind:
•Remove Bulky Coats: Heavy winter jackets can prevent the harness from fitting correctly. Always take them off before buckling your child in.
•Dress in Light Layers: Opt for thin, warm layers like fleece under the harness instead of thick coats.
•Check Harness Fit: The straps should be snug—if you can pinch extra material at the shoulder, tighten the harness.
•Add Warmth After Securing: Once the harness is fastened, cover your child with a blanket or their coat, leaving the face uncovered.
•Follow NHTSA Recommendations: Keep children rear-facing as long as possible and use a car seat appropriate for their age and size.

By following these steps, you’ll help keep your child safe and comfortable during winter travel.
