🧐When technology supports purposeful movement.
Transspinal stimulation (TSS or tSCS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique that uses surface electrodes placed over specific spinal levels to help modulate spinal cord activity and trans-synaptically activate neural structures via the posterior roots!
🧠After spinal cord injury and other central nervous system conditions, disrupted motor and sensory signaling can make purposeful movement more difficult. With nearly 70% of new SCI classified as incomplete, improving standing/walking, & functional mobility remains a key focus of rehabilitation.
⚡️Here, Charlie is performing sit-to-stand training with TSS integrated into therapy. He has self-reported improved ease of movement with stimulation on and notices a difference when it is removed.
❗️Patient responses vary and may include changes in sensation, proprioception, tone, trunk control, or endurance.
🔬 Research is ongoing, with early evidence suggesting TSS may be a promising tool when combined with skilled, task-specific therapy.
