❤️ Some of the most important words we practice in speech therapy are the ones shared with family.

After experiencing aphasia, she’s working with our speech therapy team to strengthen her verbal expression, word finding & sentence formation.

📖In this session, Josephine is practicing reading a book to her grandson, building the communication skills she wants to use with her family every day.

🧠 What we’re working on
🔹 Word finding & naming
🔹 Building clear sentences
🔹 Using pauses to organize thoughts
🔹 Reading comprehension
🔹 Practicing language through everyday activities

One of Josephine’s biggest motivations? Her grandchildren. With triplets in the family, it gives her plenty of little listeners to read to. 🥰

Therapy like this helps turn practice in the clinic into meaningful conversations, stories & meaningful moments shared at home.

👩‍🏫 From clinic to classroom.

Always learning & always sharing! 🧠

Our PT Kayla recently visited Oakland University to speak with students about vestibular rehab & the evaluation/treatment of common vestibular conditions.

😵‍💫 During the session, students learned how to assess BPPV and other vestibular disorders, including hands-on practice with oculomotor screening & clinical testing used to identify sources of dizziness & balance impairment.

Opportunities like this allow clinicians to share real-world experience while helping prepare the next generation of therapists to confidently evaluate & treat vestibular conditions.

We love seeing our team contributing to the education of future clinicians & advancing the field of neurologic rehabilitation! 🤓

A little St. Patrick’s Day fun in speech therapy ☘️

Our clients took a break from their speech exercises to share some classic St. Patty’s Day jokes. Turns out a little laughter is good for the brain too, helping support speech, memory & social connection.

We’re feeling pretty lucky to spend our day laughing and learning together. Maybe the real pot of gold is good company and a few great jokes 🌈

This session led to something exciting!

🏈Jim is working through right-sided hemiparesis after a traumatic brain injury he sustained playing football in high school. Years later, he’s still showing up and putting in the work.

He used to run regularly at the gym, but changes in balance and confidence made that feel out of reach for a while.

In this session we’re layering strength, balance & movement challenges to prepare for higher-level activity.

🔹Hurdle stepping forward & backward for coordination/balance

🔹Split-stance lunges for single-leg strength

🔹Tall kneeling hip drive with resistance & overhead reach

🔹Quick side stepping for lateral stability

🔹 Forward & backward walking control

All building up towards something Jim was really pumped about - jogging again!

Congratulations Jim on taking the steps to get back to the things that bring you joy, we’re here every step of the way!

From treating patients… to being one. And now almost back to full speed!

🦵After undergoing a patellofemoral arthroplasty + tibial tubercle osteotomy, our OT Gabby has been putting in the work to rebuild strength & stability in her knee.

As she nears the end of her rehab journey, sessions are focused on higher-level strength & plyometric training to prepare her body for the demands of daily living.

💥 What she’s working on:

🔹 Band-assisted plyometrics to reintroduce jumping with reduced impact

🔹 Step-off landings to train controlled single-leg force absorption

🔹 Single-leg RDLs with ball transfers to challenge balance & dynamic control

🔹 Single-leg squats on the Total Gym for progressive strength

Rehab isn’t just about healing. It’s about getting back to the things that make you feel like yourself again & for Gabby, that’s dancing! 💃

Great work Gabby & Happy Birthday! 🥳🎉

🤓Always learning so we can keep doing better for the people we serve.

Some of our therapists recently attended the Certified Stroke Rehabilitation Specialist (CSRS) course, an advanced continuing education program focused on evidence-based stroke recovery.

The training dives into evidence-based research & application on topics like:
🧠 Motor recovery and neuroplasticity
🦿 Gait and mobility retraining
💪 Strength and functional task training
⚖️ Balance and fall risk reduction
🎯 Carryover into meaningful daily activities

Opportunities like this help our team stay current, challenge our clinical thinking, and bring new strategies back to the clinic for the individuals we work with every day.
A CSRS course is never complete without including the one & only, JJ Mowder! A familiar face in the neuro rehab community known for sharing practical stroke rehab education online.

If you aren’t already, make sure to give her a follow for great resources & inspiration for neuro rehab!

MS Awareness Week 🧡

Living with MS often means finding new ways to support movement, balance & independence!

There isn’t one solution that works for everyone, but exploring adaptive tools & footwear options can sometimes make everyday mobility feel a little more manageable.

Recently we had the chance to check out Cadense shoes, a design created with neurological conditions like MS, stroke, and foot drop in mind.

👟 Some of the features include:
🔹 Slide & glide design: Raised nylon pads on each side of the sole help reduce friction when the foot brushes the ground

🔹 Smooth transition: A curved rocker sole helps guide the foot forward during walking

🔹 Stop & push-off grip: The front of the sole provides traction to assist with push-off during steps

🔹 Accessibility features: A Velcro strap and finger loop allow for easier one-handed donning

For individuals navigating MS, small design changes can sometimes make a big difference in day-to-day mobility.

We’re always interested in exploring tools and strategies that may help people stay active, confident & engaged in the activities that matter most to them!

🧡Let’s kick off MS Awareness Week by highlighting a hard-working individual. Meet Jodi!

Jodi is putting in the work! 👏

Living with Multiple Sclerosis can bring challenges with balance, coordination & mobility, but that doesn’t stop her from showing up ready to push herself each session.

💥Today she’s navigating an obstacle course in the SoloStep system, walking over riverstones, stepping over yoga blocks & finishing it off with cone toe taps.

Each element adds a different challenge while the SoloStep provides support so she can safely work outside of her comfort zone.

🎯 What she’s working on
🔹 Balance on uneven surfaces
🔹 Obstacle negotiation during walking
🔹 Single-leg stability with cone taps
🔹 Confident gait without an assistive device

Progress with MS isn’t always linear, but every step forward builds strength, confidence & independence.
MS looks different for everyone.

🧡For Jodi, it looks like determination, resilience & showing up ready to keep moving forward.

For more than 40 years, Michigan’s auto no-fault law protected drivers and families after serious crashes. But changes passed in 2019 reshaped those protections—especially for seniors, those on Medicare, Medicaid and covered under typical health insurance coverage.

To help consumers make informed decisions, CPAN has released an updated flyer comparing No-Fault Unlimited/Lifetime medical coverage. It’s a clear, side-by-side guide designed to explain today’s risks and choices.

Falls happen. Knowing how to handle them safely matters. 💡

Emma is a recent spinal cord injury survivor, and part of her rehab includes preparing for situations that can happen in everyday life.

♿️For individuals who use a wheelchair, learning what to do if a fall occurs is an important step toward building independence and confidence.

In this session, Emma practices a controlled fall from her wheelchair and works through the steps to safely recover from the floor. This includes learning how to roll her body to protect vulnerable areas, problem-solving positioning, and using upper body strength to work toward getting back to her chair. 💪

Practicing these scenarios in a structured environment with therapist support helps Emma build the strength, technique & confidence to manage unexpected situations more safely.

Because rehabilitation isn’t only about movement when things go as planned.

It’s also about being prepared when they don’t. ❤️

Training the brain and body together. 🧠💪

In our Concentrated Stroke Rehab (CSR) program, Andrew is working through a dynamic color catch challenge in tall kneeling.

BlazePods are placed on colored targets, and he must:

🔵 Identify & verbally call out the mismatched color
🔴 Switch the pod to the correct dot
🟠 Tap to trigger the next round

🔥This progresses from tall kneeling to half kneeling, and from elevated surfaces to floor-level targets. Increasing balance demands, weight shifting & motor control.

🎯 What this targets:
🔹 Divided attention & processing speed
🔹 Visual scanning & problem solving
🔹 Trunk control & postural stability
🔹 Hip stability in kneeling positions
🔹 Motor planning under cognitive load

❓🧠 Why it matters:
Daily life requires multitasking. We walk while scanning the environment, adjust when something changes & make decisions in real time.

So we should train that way!

Maximizing stroke recovery, one intentional challenge at a time. Great work in the program, Andrew! 👏
