Honoring our Heroes on Purple Heart Day

Each year on August 7th, we pause to honor the courageous men and women of the U.S. military who have been wounded or killed in action.

At Angela Hospice, we proudly participate in We Honor Veterans, a national initiative by the NHPCO and Department of Veterans Affairs. This program allows us to give back in a meaningful way by ensuring our veteran patietns receive the honor, care, and support they deserve at the end of life.

Through this program, we:

💜Formally recognize each veteran for their service
💜Address needs tied to military service or traumatic experiences
💜Coordinate with veteran service agencies
💜Provide individualized emotional and spiritual support
💜Train our staff and volunteers in veteran-centered care

Within our Care Centers and throughout Hospice Home Care, our team is here to help veterans find comfort, dignity, and peace.

At 87 years young, George “Rudy” Ski is still giving—with humility, humor, and a heart full of gratitude.

This August, during Make-A-Will Month, we’re honored to share George’s inspiring story. As a proud member of Angela Hospice’s Legacy Society, George has included Angela Hospice in his will, ensuring that his compassion will continue to make a difference for generations to come.

His story is a beautiful reminder of how planned giving can leave a legacy of love.

* What does it mean to truly grieve and to grieve well?
* Why is it so hard to move on?
* Why didn’t my faith prepare me for this kind of pain?
* And what am I supposed to do now?

These questions sound familiar to many grievers, and they are questions that author Amanda Held Opelt asked as she experienced grief. She decided to look for answers, exploring the mourning rituals of past generations, looking at different cultures and traditions to find hope.

Her memoir, "A Hole in the World: Finding Hope in Rituals of Grief and Healing" is the story of her exlploration, and it's our Healing Hearts Book Club pick for August.

We hope you'll join us as we discuss this thoughtful book, August 26, 2-3 p.m. at our Livonia Care Center. https://angelahospice.org/events/healing-hearts-book-club-2025/

The Blake family honored Gordon "Gordy" Blake at last year's Walk of Remembrance, held exactly one year after Gordy passed away. His family formed team "Flash Gordon," walking together and sharing special moments and memories of someone they loved so dearly.

“It’s so nice to go somewhere and be among others who’ve experienced the same grief," said Karen Blake, Gordy's wife. "You feel the support and the community. It reminds you that you’re not alone.”

This year's Walk of Remembrance will take place on the Angela Hospice grounds in Livonia on September 6, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. We hope you'll consider joining us for this meaningful event.

Each year, we come together to celebrate the heart and soul of Angela Hospice, our amazing volunteers. This year’s theme, “A Moment In Time,” reflects the invaluable gift of time that our volunteers generously share with us.

In 2024 alone, our volunteers gave an incredible 9,782 hours! Whether it was making deliveries, sitting with patients, offering respite for caregivers, tending to our beautiful gardens, assisting at Camp Monarch, or helping with events and behind-the-scenes tasks, every single hour spent with us is a moment that makes a real difference.

We are grateful for each and every one of our volunteers, and we couldn’t do this important work without you. Thank you for your time, dedication, and compassion.

Sometimes one person's kindness can make all the difference.

On this installment of "My Unsung Hero," we hear the story of nurse Ray, and how his display of care and sympathy made a lasting impact on a bereaved son.

You can listen to the 2-minute story here: https://www.npr.org/2025/07/21/nx-s1-5472448/after-his-father-died-in-the-hospital-a-nurse-held-him-in-his-arms

We'd like to thank all the caring nurses and healthcare professionals whose kindness makes such a difference every day as well!

Alek Hermon didn't think much of his father's overnight nurse until his father died.

Our Camp Monarch, held earlier this month for grieving children, was such a special weekend for all involved.

Director of Supportive Care, Teri Schmitchen, praised our Grief Care team for the wonderful activities they created to engage the campers, saying they "did a tremendous job of developing and implementing such powerful, intentional interventions to help our children through their grief journey. They provided the groundwork for years of continued healing and growth to happen."

We're grateful to all who had a hand in making this special day possible: to our team members, our volunteers, our donors, and all the families who have shared their journey with us.

This is the butterfly garden at our Livonia Care Center. From above, the garden is in the shape of a butterfly's wing, but the thoughtfully selected plants also attract butterflies and even hummingbirds to our picturesque grounds.

This time of of year the garden is looking especially beautiful thanks to the volunteers who tend it with such loving care. It's a peaceful place for patients and families to visit, watch the butterflies and bees, and enjoy the beauty of nature. 🦋

As we comemmorate our 40th anniversary this year, we continue to share moments from Angela Hospice's history. It was 29 years ago that Michigan Governor John Engler came to Angela Hospice to sign House Bills 5490 and 5491, which are now Public Acts 224 and 267 of 1996. With these bills, inpatient hospice facilities were recognized as their own separate entities, distinct from nursing homes.

In fact, Angela Hospice was the first freestanding dedicated hospice facility in the state!

Pictured here with the Governor are our founder, Sister Mary Giovanni Monge; Bishop Allen Vigneron; and Representative Gerald Law.
