I'm happy to see this article because this topic often comes up in therapy. We often feel like the world is devolving, becoming increasingly more dangerous and that we should be prepared for disaster at any tome. The reality is that crime and violent crime have been on a steady decline in America. The world might feel so dangerous because of what we consume on social media and from the news. If we're afraid, we generally consume more. If we consume, someone somewhere gets rich. So I recommend being mindful of the quantity and quality of what someone takes in, due to the large impact it can have on emotional health.
Both violent and property crime are far below their 1990s peak, but some crimes see periodic rises.
