Another week down for our Raw Milk drop 🤍 This week Bri brought in 22 jars 😳 Seriously the best tasting raw milk!! I’m so thankful we have this option in our community.

Some people wonder why raw milk is “so expensive” and while we do understand that sentiment completely, we should probably be asking how on earth the grocery store milk is so cheap? That’s not a rabbit trail I’m going to go down right now but I thought I’d take a moment to share some of the reasons why our prices are what they are.

1. Feed
We use only organic grains and minerals (from a mill in Texas) to supplement our girls when they’re in milk and that is certainly not cheap. We don’t want our family to consume glyphosate and we don’t want our cows to either. We also do feed hay sometimes if our pastures are lacking or we are in a drought.

2. Milking Supplies
Between wipes and dips for cleaning udders, all natural fly sprays and actual machine parts and filters that wear out and need to be replaced… there’s a lot of cost that goes into daily milking that people never see or think about.

3. Vet and Breeding Costs
These don’t need an explanation but obviously if and when a problem does come up… it costs a whole lot.

4. Infrastructure
Maintaining and building fencing, keeping gates functioning, replacing trough float valves…. the list goes on and on. You would think you could buy something once and have it last but turns out cows sometimes enjoy breaking things more than we’d like them to.

5. Cleaning Supplies
From washing and sanitizing milkers, our cooling tank and every glass jar… we use a lottttt of cleaners. And as a raw milk dairy, that’s a good thing!

I could probably list 100 different things here and that wouldn’t even include being paid for our time that we spending milking, cleaning and delivering milk every single day… but I’ll stop after 5. 😅

Raw milk is something that must be produced and handled very carefully in order to keep it a nutritious, low risk food. The cost isn’t what it is so we can get rich (believe me!!). It costs what it costs because truly that’s what it costs. Without government subsidies and interference throwing things out of whack… oops! I said I wasn’t going to go there. 😂

You get the picture I think. Raw milk is wonderful.
But it’s labor and cost intensive to produce. And I didn’t even include in that list the cost of cows and equipment initially!

I digress.

I know it’s not cheap to buy raw milk and that’s truly one of the reasons we started milking our own cows. We fully understand that our milk is not for everyone but for those who understand and choose us…
