You’re an individual, not just your age. Your health isn’t defined by your birthday. Your ability to carry a healthy pregnancy and baby isn’t in jeopardy just because you’re over 35.

And for some of us, we are in better shape now than we were in our 20s. Yes, statistically women over 35 are more likely to develop complications, but it’s far from a guarantee! Remember what’s most likely happen: a healthy pregnancy and baby. And should anything change, just like in any monitored pregnancy, the doctors are there should you *actually* become high risk.

And there are perks. You get genetic testing covered by insurance. You’ll have extra ultrasounds (if you want them). And you’ll get to have faith in a body that’s gotten you this far

Nothing in birth is black or white. Including when to leave for the hospital!

The 511 or 411 rule is a good foundation but it’s not a perfect metric. Many labors can start in the 3-5 minute range but the intensity just isn’t there- which for a first time mom can also be hard to judge, because early labor can feel intense!

Watch your behavior, check in with yourself more than you check in on a timer. Most of the time the app will tell you to go to the hospital and will be too early! Listen to yourself and/or check in with your doula about if it’s the “right” time.

But honestly, the right time, is the time that feels right for you. Not a range. Not ChatGPT. Not even your doula. Only you can make that call.

When did you leave for your birth place? Too soon? Too late? Just right? Let’s hear your story ⬇️

Never say never ✨

If you had an epidural, what was your experience?

Birth “plans” are actually about flexibility.

It’s about knowing your options & having the right questions to ask. It’s about learning about birth in all the scenarios so you don’t feel blindsided when you’re up against it in the middle of the most vulnerable time of your life. It’s about ownership of your experience, however that might look.

Even leaning about birth can’t fully prepare for the experience of living through it. But I would rather have you go into labor with more information & the ability to be flexible rather than feeling like things are happening to you or so attached to a rigid birth plan that you feel defensive & already in fight or flight.

If you’ve been hesitant about taking a childbirth education class, let this be a sign to you to stop waiting and sign up.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how most women never really get to tell their full birth story.

Like the real one — not the quick version, not the one that gets interrupted or turned into advice or feel judged for. All birth experiences are welcome in this space.

So I’m hosting a small Birth Story Circle on April 19 (which is also my birthday)🤍

We’ll start with a grounding meditation, move into storytelling, and close with some quiet reflection.

You’re welcome to share or just come and listen.

I’m keeping it really small (only 8 spots) so it feels safe and intimate.

Suggested donation is $10–20 to support the space.

If this feels like something you’ve been needing, send me a message and I’ll get you the details 💛

I’m not saying do or don’t. I’m just saying don’t put too much pressure on yourself or your body if you do.

Cervical exams in pregnancy are important for induction. Beyond that, it’s really just for curiosity. It does not predict when labor will start.

It’s okay to be curious. It’s okay to want to know. Just go into it with the knowledge that your body is doing things you can’t feel or measure to prep for labor. Things ARE happening even if it doesn’t seem like it.

Birth is a mystery. We still don’t know how or why labor starts when it does. I know it’s hard to live with uncertainty but that part of the surrender.

You don’t find a lot of optimism culturally or in the medical world when you have your babies past 35…

But I’m here to change that tune.

Your age does not dictate the health of your pregnancy or your ability to birth your baby.

Your age is not a reason to label you high risk.

Your age is not a liability.

But who you choose to support you in pregnancy and birth could be… find a provider who will treat you as an individual, promote healthy lifestyle and diet, and believes in your ability to have a healthy pregnancy in birth, regardless of your age.
