Did you know that thanks to the Liberty Ellis Foundation we have the opportunity to discover the oral history of almost 2000 immigrants who passed through Ellis Island.
"I remember being on the boat in the very, very lowest part of the boat in one room, four children and my mother. And most of us were sick most of the time. I think it took us about three weeks to come over. But I remember going up on the dock and the people from the First Class used to throw down pennies and oranges and bananas, and we had never seen oranges or bananas, because I don't think Russia, where we lived it wasn't a warm enough climate. We only had apples and, you know, other fruits that would come from colder climates." --Mae (Malka) Rappaport b.1908; arrived at Ellis Island -1913
