Fascia is a Whole-Body System

Pain is rarely where the problem begins.

Fascial is continuous web running from head to toe.

A restriction in one area can create tension somewhere completely different.

For example:

• Foot restrictions can affect the neck

• Hip restrictions can create back pain

• Abdominal restrictions can affect breathing

This is why Myofascial Release treats the whole body, not just the area of pain, treating the BEING of the human being.

Everything in the body is connected through the fascial network.

Why Relaxation Alone Isn’t Enough 🧘‍♀️🧘🏻‍♂️🧘🏻 Many people try to calm their nervous system with meditation, breathing, or mindfulness.

These are wonderful tools.
Healing happens in the body, not the mind.

But if fascial restrictions are physically pulling on the nervous system, the body may still feel stuck in stress no matter how hard you try to relax.

Fascia can hold:
• trauma
• inflammation
• injuries
• surgical scars
• emotional experiences

Myofascial Release works with the body — not against it.

Through sustained pressure and listening to the body, restrictions begin to release, allowing the nervous system to shift naturally into rest, repair, and healing.

When the fascia changes, the nervous system follows.

Past trauma can show up in protective postures, holding patterns, and subtle positions the body adopts over time. In this clip, John Barnes explains how thes...

Its all connected!

I felt the strain of my forward neck posture in my hamstrings yesterday, and actually, this morning still. That is because your body does not function by individual parts and pieces, but rather as a whole.

The excess stretch on the back of my neck was borrowing length from anywhere it could, and I felt it all the way down at my hamstrings.

Today I am trying to shorten the back of my body, and lengthen the front, by shifting from a position of forwards flexion into extension. And not only passively, but actively. This means engaging our muscles in these positions, not just passively sitting in them. So actively looking up at the sky, reaching my shoulders back behind me, and things like that 🙂

"We have to go into chaos for anything meaningful to happen."

My notes from John Barnes' cervical thoracic seminar fits pretty darn well for these days. Hang in there. Reorganization can be chaotic.

Eventually there is peace in the valley.

Question: Does myofascial release affect the acupuncture meridians?

"Yes, absolutely. I believe that the acupuncture meridians lie within the physical aspect of the fascial system. Its a well-known fact in physics that if you take a copper wire and crush or twist it, it loses its ability to conduct energy properly.

The fascial system is full of melanin, which is our body's superconductor, and the nervous system is full of neuromelanin. When you have fascial restrictions, it is the equivalent of twisting or crushing copper wire. The fascial restrictions are compressing the acupuncture meridians, and as they are being twisted and crushed they lose their ability to conduct the "chi," or bioenergy, properly.

So as you unwind or do myofascial release you are opening up the acupuncture channels again, realigning them, and opening up space so that the energy can flow through.

A beloved client of mine sent me this text a week or so ago.. and I just cant get over how cool this is.

Look at her resting heart rate for 21 weeks.

Then look at the last 5.

Thats pretty dramatic.

Her nervous system had a dramatic shift into the parasympathetic, allowing a myriad of things to shift, and heal. Not just a resting heart rate decrease. But a healing that comes from within 💖

Our subconscious doesn't just live in the mind. It lives in our fascia. During myofascial release, we are releasing patterns and restrictions that go far beyond muscle tension..
