Janel lives on the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan where she founded the Munising Bay Mindfulness Meditation Circle, meeting for weekly and retreat practice since 2013. Her own practice began in 1990 via Sivananda yoga, and in 2012 she began teaching Kripalu yoga, a heart centered yogic style. Her Insight Meditation practice began around 2004 following Gil Fronsdal. She has completed a two-year meditation teacher training with Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield, and is currently a student with Gil Fronsdal and Ines Freedman. Janel is a dharma volunteer with Insight Retreat Center in Santa Cruz, where she regularly sits retreats. Recently retired from a 34-year career in natural resources management, Janel finds dharma inspiration and support in Nature, often practicing outdoors and in wild settings. She and her husband are avid gardeners and enjoy a wide range of outdoor pursuits. Janel is also a watercolor artist. Her two adult children live in Oregon and Alaska

Community Service Project: Winter Kits for the Unhoused

Join Northern Utah Insight in a special act of compassion as we assemble Winter Kits for the Unhoused in Cache Valley.
Saturday, November 8th | 4:45–6:30pm
Unitarian Universalist House, Logan

We’ll share a warm community meal together while putting together kits to offer comfort and care during the cold months. Everyone is welcome—come for connection, service, and the joy of giving.

If you can’t attend on November 8th, you can still participate by bringing donation items to Sunday Shanti or Monday Sangha gatherings. A donation box will be available each week.

Most needed items: small foil blankets, hand warmers, and small meat sticks (like mini Slim Jims).
Other helpful items include travel-size toiletries, band-aids, travel wipes, sandwich bags, and feminine hygiene products.
(Please ensure items are small enough to fit in sandwich-sized bags.)

The kits will be distributed to rescue missions, warming centers, and kept in our own cars to share directly with those in need.
