Join Matt Wappett for The Janus Month: A Black Metal Yoga Ritual, on January 9 from 7-8:30 pm in the Ananda Room at Shanti Yoga Roots.

The holidays are dead. The lights have dimmed. We are left with the gray silence of January. In ancient tradition, this month belongs to Janus, the two-faced god who looks simultaneously into the ruins of the past and the void of the future. On January 9, we gather on the mat to embody this transition.

This Black Metal Yoga practice is dedicated to Tapas (fiery discipline). While the world freezes outside, we will generate internal heat through a physically demanding flow accompanied by dark atmospheric Black Metal. Rejecting the hollow promise of “New Year’s Resolutions,” we will instead practice Sankalpa—a yogic vow of deep, uncompromising determination. Fueled by the atmospheric weight of Black Metal, we will burn away the Samskaras (old patterns) that no longer serve us and forge an iron will for the year ahead.

This practice is not about “New Year, New You.” This is about survival and resilience.

We don’t come to the mat to make wishes. We come to do the work.

Thinking about the 2026 we desire is great, but manifesting the year of our dreams takes a little more inner work. We will be processing the past year through artistic prompts, writing about and confronting our fears and limiting beliefs in order to make space for the growth we seek, and then creating a beautiful physical representation of our hopes to take home with us.

There will also be an opportunity for anyone who would like to step aside for a personal tarot reading with Madeleine about the year ahead!

To finish the night, we will enjoy a special sound bath led by Amy. Mindy, body and spirit will experience healing and rejuvenation for the year ahead.
