💙 Stephani’s Heart Journey 💙
At 28, Stephani Remetta learned she had a congenital heart defect that went undiagnosed her whole life. By 38, she underwent open-heart surgery. A second chance she calls “amazing.”

“The team here saved my life… this is the only place I would take my heart,” she said.

When Kara Peeden planned for her baby's delivery, the Martinsville, Indiana, mother didn't have to look far from home.

“I chose Franciscan Health because I grew up in the system,” said Kara, who delivered her baby at Franciscan Health Mooresville. "I've just always been comfortable here and I never wanted to switch after I had to get my own insurance. I was just really comfortable here."

Brian Drummond has been affiliated with the VASIA program since January 2016, beginning as a student intern in the Masters of Social Work Program at IU Northwest. With a background in Social Services since 2003 and a practitioner since 2005, Brian quickly connected with the mission of VASIA—first as a volunteer and later as staff in August 2019.

👥 The Volunteer Advocates for Seniors and Incapacitated Adults (VASIA) program is a collaborative effort between Franciscan Health and Lake County Superior Courts. Volunteers receive training and supervision as court-appointed guardians, helping seniors and vulnerable adults with critical decision-making needs.

Brian shares:
💬 “The work has become second-nature as I have organically become devoted to providing hands-on support to my assigned clients and genuine care and concern. Part of the devotion requires ongoing training and an ethical responsibility to remain current with trends and changes within the medical and social sphere of volunteer service delivery. One of the ways that I do this is by providing training to new and prospective volunteers who decide to do this work. Ultimately the goal is to improve the quality of life to the clients in our program in which I feel and see this occurring in an intuitive manner that cannot be adequately explained in words. Purpose-Driven.”

🙏 Thank you, Brian, for your dedication and compassion.

“I was in the ER for a head injury after sustaining a fall. The hair was extremely matted and dried to my head. Kilynn had told me earlier that she would help wash my hair so I would not have to cut it. She and another nurse spent the next 90 minutes working on my hair. Even though her shift ended at 11 p.m., she stayed an hour more to finish the job. She knew it was likely my hair would need cut if it wasn’t cleaned and brushed. She cared how I was feeling and knew I was miserable. It helped so much, and her kindness will not be forgotten!”

Congratulations to Kilynn Wagoner at Franciscan Health Indianapolis for being selected as our latest DAISY Award winner and for her “empathy, compassion and caring” for patients.

The DAISY Award is an esteemed international recognition program that acknowledges the compassionate care nurses provide daily and the impact they have on patients and their families. We thank Kilynn for embodying our Franciscan values in her work every day.
