In the early hours of Feb. 16, a phone call changed one family’s life — but the voice on the other end brought unexpected peace. Katina Rivera had the difficult task of informing a patient’s loved one that life-saving measures were being taken. Her calm, compassionate presence over the phone gave the family strength during an unthinkable moment.

But her care didn’t stop there.

After finishing her 12-hour shift, Katina chose to visit the ICU to check on the daughter and her mother offering a hug, sharing stories and simply being present.

It’s this kind of heartfelt compassion that defines what it means to be a nurse. 💛 Congratulations and thank you to DAISY Award recipient Katina Rivera, RN, at Franciscan Health Crown Point. 🌼

"You can't fake preparation," said Dr. Andrew Hills, sports medicine doctor with Franciscan Health. "It's consistency. It's like brushing your teeth. You should incorporate a little bit of it into your daily routine ... and find what you love to do because when you find enjoyment in those activities that will keep you going."

Dr. Hills talked about injury prevention with sports recently with WTHR-TV.

Around 2.6 million sports and recreation-related injuries are treated in emergency rooms each year.
