Depression is more than feeling sad. It changes how your body works. When you are depressed, your brain may feel more pain. Your muscles can feel tense. You may sleep poorly. Poor sleep can make pain worse. Not moving much can make joints stiff. Worry and fear can make the pain feel bigger.
Your brain uses the same signals for mood and for pain. When the mood is low, pain signals can grow stronger. This is why some people get more pain when they are depressed. Treating only the pain might not help if depression is also present.
