Scheer Memorial Adventist Hospital (SMAH) recently reached a remarkable milestone: 732 outpatient visits in a single day, a day that showcased the dedication and resilience of everyone at SMAH.

To celebrate this achievement and recognize the hard work of the entire team, SMAH shared warm hot chocolate and cookies, a small but heartfelt moment of connection and appreciation in the middle of a busy day.

AHI is proud of the SMAH team and grateful for their ongoing commitment to bringing compassionate, high-quality care to their community.

Behind every smooth-running hospital and clinic are individuals working to keep critical equipment functioning, and AHI’s biomedical technicians are at the heart of that effort.

This week, biomedical technicians across Angola, Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone carried out vital maintenance and repairs that keep patient care moving forward. From fixing X-ray and anesthetic machines to restoring theatre lamps, generators, and power systems, their work ensures that doctors and nurses can serve effectively and efficiently.

Whether replacing components, installing new devices, or troubleshooting complex systems, each task contributes to stronger hospitals and safer care for patients.

Across Africa, AHI’s biomedical technicians were hard at work this September, keeping essential hospital equipment running strong.

From Angola to Zambia, teams completed preventive and corrective maintenance on critical devices including hematology analyzers, operating tables, suction machines, weighing scales, slit lamps, X-ray card readers, oxygen concentrators, dental chairs, air compressor machines, and dental X-ray sensors. They also carried out wheelchair installations and LED lighting upgrades.

The commitment of AHI’s biomedical technicians keeps lifesaving equipment in service and supports healthcare workers in providing safe, effective treatment.

Juli Daniels, Global Health Institute Program Manager for International Service, recently visited one of Loma Linda University Health’s Global Campuses—Scheer Memorial Adventist Hospital (SMAH) in Banepa, Nepal.

Soon after her arrival, widespread protests erupted across the country, resulting in nearly 100 deaths and thousands of injuries. Patients from Banepa and surrounding areas flooded into SMAH, where staff worked tirelessly for days without rest, caring for the injured and supporting their community through the crisis.

Juli witnessed the hospital team’s calm determination and compassion amid uncertainty—a powerful reflection of LLUH’s mission to extend healing and hope, even in the most challenging circumstances.

At AHS Waterloo Hospital in Sierra Leone, Hassan Sesay and his family lived through the most difficult chapter of their lives. After giving birth to their second child, Hassan’s wife, Fatmata, suffered massive complications, losing dangerous amounts of blood and requiring 15 transfusions. She later developed kidney failure, spending weeks on dialysis. Meanwhile, their newborn became severely malnourished when she could not breastfeed.

In those days, Hassan feared he might lose both his wife and child. But thanks to God’s mercy and the sacrificial care of Waterloo Hospital staff, who served faithfully even while running on limited resources, both mother and child survived. The hospital covered most of the medical costs, found formula for the baby, and worked tirelessly to stabilize Fatmata’s condition.

Hassan shares: “This is our testimony: this is what the Lord has done.”

What began as a dream years ago to bring accredited Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) training to Africa became a reality this summer. Delayed by the pandemic, the vision came alive in this summer when eight chaplains from five countries gathered in Malawi for the first-ever Global Chaplaincy Training (GCT): Africa Initiative.

Hosted at Blantyre Adventist Hospital and Malamulo Adventist Hospital, the inaugural eight-week course was a landmark collaboration between Loma Linda University Health (LLUH), Adventist Health International (AHI), and the Global Health Institute (GHI). Under the guidance of LLUH’s Chaplain Services team, the chaplains completed 300 hours of clinical training and 100 hours of classroom learning, equipping them to provide compassionate, patient-centered care across the continent.
For many participants, this moment marked the fulfillment of a lifelong calling.

“For many years, I attempted to pursue Pastoral Clinical Education but faced challenges in successfully completing it,” said Chaplain Gladson Thumbalamoto of Malawi. “Today, I embrace my new role as a trained chaplain with a heart full of gratitude.” Others echoed the transformation, calling the experience both personally and professionally life-changing.

This is just the beginning. With plans to expand into Eastern and Western Africa and to develop local CPE educators, the Global Chaplaincy Training: Africa Initiative is planting seeds that will strengthen spiritual care for generations to come.

This summer, Adventist Health International (AHI) and Loma Linda University Health (LLUH) partnered with Malawi Adventist University–Malamulo Campus to launch the Advanced Lab Training Program. The initiative equips lab professionals with advanced skills, leadership training, and mentorship to improve patient care across the continent.
