Leucovorin (folinic acid) is not for every child with autism, but research suggests it may be helpful for certain subgroups.
Some children studied include those with:
• Folate receptor antibodies (FRAA)
• Methylation or folate pathway differences
• Speech and language delays
• Limited response to standard interventions
Studies have shown that children with folate receptor antibodies, in particular, may experience improvements in verbal communication and social interaction when leucovorin is used under medical supervision.
Because autism is neurologically diverse, leucovorin is typically considered only after:
• Medical evaluation
• Review of lab markers and history
• Individualized treatment planning
