This is the time of year for resolutions. If you're like many people, the new year may bring a renewed focus on improving your physical health and fitness. You may also have other goals that will improve your cognitive, emotional, social, or spiritual health. Whatever your goals may be, it helps to make them specific. And that’s the first step in the SMART approach to achieving your goals.
Specific — Get detailed about what you want to do. For example, “I’m going to lose five pounds in the next two months,” vs. “I’m going to walk for 30 minutes every morning.”
Measurable — Have a plan to track your progress. Write it down. If you’re learning to play the piano, log your practice. If your aim is to eat better, journal your meals.
Achievable — The goal must be doable. Do you have the time and resources to devote to it?
Relevant — Your goal should be personally meaningful. Reminding yourself why you are doing this activity can keep you going when challenges arise.
Time-bound — Set a time or date for your goal and commit to it. Remember to create checkpoints to keep yourself on track.
