The United States practice of militarism and imperialism has created generation after generation of trauma here in the U.S. and around the world. This Memorial Day, let us remember and mourn all victims of the United States and call for an end to war, occupation, and genocide. Violence will never create a peaceful and just world. It merely creates an endless ripple effect that eventually comes back home.

Some personal news- my baby arrived safely last week. I am enjoying my first week of motherhood, and all the wonders of newborn life. I'm trying to be present and soak it all in because I know this phase will pass in the blink of an eye.

I will be taking time off to enjoy this new life phase although I'm sure I'll pop in to social media here and there. This leave will be the longest I've gone without seeing clients in about 12 years. I miss it a lot already but I'm so grateful to all of the people I work with who were so understanding and supportive. Also a huge thank you to my fellow therapists and who have made themselves available to my clients while I'm away.

Toxic shame was important to share about considering April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Please check out my new article on Hip Latina to learn more about the connection between sexual violence, toxic shame, and how to begin to heal. ❤️

Sexual abuse in the Latinx community is more pervasive than we are usually willing to talk about. This silence leaves Latina survivors to navigate the complicated impacts of sexual violence alone. Research studies show that sexual abuse, assault, and harassment are common experiences for women in the United States. 81 percent of women in the U.S. report experiencing some form of sexual harassment and/or assault in their lifetime. For Latinas, 1 in 5 reported being r***d in their lifetime and 1 in 3 reported experiencing unwanted sexual contact. One study on childhood sexual abuse (CSA) among Latinas found that the average age Latinas experienced CSA was at only 11 years old. If you have experienced sexual abuse or violence, you are not alone. It was not your fault, and you are not damaged.

An 11 minute joyride to space on a billionaire's spacecraft does nothing for feminism, humanity, or the greater good. According to Marcie Bianco "Each passenger on a typical space tourism flight of 11 minutes emits at least 75 tonnes (about 83 tons) of carbon (roughly 274 tonnes of CO₂, or about 302 tons) into the atmosphere — the equivalent of what Thailand emitted in 2023." What a waste.

Happy Monday! As we kick off a new week, we’re thrilled to celebrate the recent publication of by ! When the impact of colonialism, generational trauma, and individual trauma is often disregarded in the Latinx community, this pioneering guide addresses this trauma and takes Latinx readers on a journey of healing and liberation. From exploring what it means to have been systematically oppressed, to how it impacts us, to how to change it, the book challenges stereotypes, unravels the shame-based narratives around Latinx mental health, and refocuses the conversation around cultural empowerment, awareness, and transformation. It features historically informed psychoeducation regarding the impact of various types of trauma on Latinx mental health, as well as interactive reflection questions and healing exercises to help readers process how they, their families, and communities have been impacted. This is an invaluable resource for Latinx people and mental health professionals working within the Latinx community. What did you read over the weekend?
