An occasional drink (1-2 glasses) is safe to ring in the New Year. Though, it’s best to avoid if baby is less than 8 weeks.

Planning on drinking more? Provide a bottle of previously expressed milk. Pump to preserve your supply and avoid inflammation. No need to “pump and dump” when you can use that milk for a bath, lotion, soap, etc.

Cheers!

You trusted your body during your pregnancy and then during childbirth. It’s time to trust your body again. Every drop counts, and so do you, mama.

Relax your shoulders. Unclench your jaw. Let go of that breath and tension you’ve been holding. You are enough, and you can do this.

Over feeding is so easy and can lead to more problems with spitting up and uncomfortable tummy. Help baby take their time with the bottle.

Did you know it takes about 20 minutes for the stomach to tell the brain it’s full? There are two kinds of receptors in the stomach: stretch and density. 🥗Stretch receptors indicate how much volume is in the stomach 🧁Density receptors tell you have calorically dense the foods you’ve eaten are. ⏱It takes about 20 minutes for these receptors to communicate with the brain.
🤱🏿🤱🏻🤱🏼🤱🏾🤱🏽
⏰It’s why when you eat at the all you can eat buffet you can pound way more food than normal in a short amount of time but then feel really full and regret it. It’s also why you can eat really small “tapas” or small plates at a fine dining restaurant that takes an hour or two to eat and yet you still feel full at the end. 🍭It’s why you can eat a lot of salad and not feel as full as if you eat one slice of cheesecake.
🤱🏽🤱🏾🤱🏻🤱🏿🤱🏼
👶🏽Babies, as tiny humans, have these same stomach receptors. It’s also why most breastfed babies will take anywhere from 15-45 minutes to breastfeed. They biologically are designed to feed long enough for their tummy to tell the brain it’s full without over feeding itself. 🍼It’s also why bottle fed babies (regardless of what’s in the bottle) often get over fed. If they take too much too quick, their mouth will still be hungry even though their belly is already full.
🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼
⌛️It should take babies 3 months and younger around 15-20 minutes to take 2-4 ounces from a bottle. ⏳As babies become more efficient at the breast they will also become more efficient on the bottle. It’s ok for older babies who go back and forth between the breast and the bottle without any difficulties to take a bottle quicker (15 minutes or less), but if you feel they’re being over fed or their mouth is still hungry while the tummy is already full, go back to slowing the bottle down or try offering them a pacifier so their mouth can be happy while the brain takes it’s time to catch up to the stomach.

This is always a bittersweet day for me. I’m beyond thankful for my amazing rainbow, but not a day goes by when I don’t wonder about the angels in my heart. Wishing you all a gentle rainbow baby day 💗🌈

If we want to see more breastfeeding, we need to look at the barriers to achieving that goal. For many parents, returning to work is a major stressor and barrier to breastfeeding.

Fewer than half of infants under 6 months are exclusively breastfed despite the overwhelming majority wanting to reach that milestone. Lack of maternity leave and inability to find time or space to express milk at work are major issues.

The benefits are nearly endless for paid maternity leave and a supportive workplace (not to mention for breastfeeding itself)! If you’re returning to work and would like to chat, schedule some time today.
