Doulable Birth

Doulable Birth Professional Labor Support During Pregnancy, Birth, and the Immediate Postpartum

I am a birth doula with multiple certifications from DONA (Doulas of North America, International), and CAPPA (Childbirth Assistants and Postpartum Professional Association) and Hypnobabies [several certifications lapsed because I was too busy attending births to re-certify!]. I am a trained lactation educator and a professional sleep coach for older babies. As a former attorney, I am especially interested in educating pregnant mamas about their rights to informed consent and refusal.

Please share! Lost our first foster dog Dec 6th - she bolted, has collar with tag, is microchipped but doesn't answer to any name (yet!) as she is a rescue dog from the Kern County shelter and was pulled out for foster because she is PREGNANT! She's scared and shy. We got her on Saturday Dec 5, she bolted Sunday last seen running on 3rd St and Elliot lane, Dec 6th at 7:15 pm.

This title page is giving me feelings.

i'm offended that the magazine asked this question as the lead in.
Of course I'd be willing to hire a male doula - if men can't be everything that a doula is and does, what's the point? The point of teaching our sons better, expecting better from our dates/partners, expecting them to be good fathers, sons, brothers, lovers? A male doula is just a doula.

If men can't be good birth partners, then there is no point to the Bradley Method (actually originally called Husband Coached Birth, by the way - they switched up the name to honor couples who are not hetero, not married - you can see it still in the letters after a Bradley teacher's name, AAHCC - American Academy of Husband Coached Childbirth, I think).

If the doula's s*x is actually "changing" the birth experience then we can't have male OBs, male OB nurses (I've met a lovely one in a Santa Monica hospital), male midwives. What's the point of even letting men in the room when their babies are born if men can't be doulas, and if having this male doula changes the birth experience then what the f**k!

Meet the man doula who is changing the birth experience for many women while also shattering gender norms and stereotypes.

Statistics don't lie we aren't treating pregnant black women fairly and it's hurting them and their babies we've got to do better.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill Monday aiming to address the issue of Black women dying in childbirth at disproportionately high rates compared to their white peers.

The legislation, authored by California state Sen. Holly Mitchell (D), will require hospitals and clinics in the state to implement implicit bias training for all health care providers working in perinatal services. Sponsored by NARAL, Black Women for Wellness and other groups, the bill also requires the state’s health department to track and publish additional data around pregnancy-related deaths in an effort to better understand the issue.

The U.S. has the worst maternal mortality rate among all developed countries. And the risk of pregnancy-related deaths is three to four times higher for Black women than for white women, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Black women do deserve better,” Mitchell, who is a Black mother, said in a news release last month. “Bias, implicit or explicit, should no longer impact a woman’s ability to deliver a full-term baby or to survive childbirth.”

“I charge Black women to ask their provider before selecting an obstetrician, ‘Have you gone through implicit bias training? Because I want to increase the likelihood of my survival when delivering this baby,’” she added.

The issue of Black maternal mortality garnered new attention recently after tennis star Serena Williams and singer Beyoncé publicly discussed the difficulties and complications they faced in childbirth.

Lawmakers — including Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) and Democratic presidential candidates Sens. Kamala Harris (Calif.), Cory Booker (N.J.) and Elizabeth Warren (Mass.) — have also raised alarm about the high rates of maternal mortality in the U.S, specifically for Black women.

“The best studies that I’ve seen put it down to just one thing: prejudice,” Warren said at a forum in April. “Doctors and nurses don’t hear African American women’s medical issues the same way as they hear the same things from white women.”
