16+ Now eligible for Covid Vaccine in Long Beach!

Exciting news to share. Over 43% of eligible adults are now vaccinated in Long Beach -- that means we can start vaccinating all residents age 16 and over TODAY. With this move, Long Beach once again sets the pace for the State of California and I am so proud of the successful vaccination program we have here in our city.

All Long Beach residents 16 and over are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine without an appointment. You will not see the option to book an appointment online through My Turn until April 15, once the State officially opens up the 16-49 age group category statewide.

If you still need a vaccine, please visit the Long Beach Convention Center’s walk-up vaccination site from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Individuals must be able to prove they meet our eligibility requirements. Information on documentation can be found at longbeach.gov/VaxLB.

Approximately 500 vaccinations will be administered each day. Once our community has used up the vaccine supply for that day, all additional walk-ups will be offered an opportunity to schedule a future appointment. Please follow signs placed at the Convention Center to be directed to the walk-up vaccination site, which is ADA accessible.

We are making great progress on vaccinations. To our heroic health care workers, thank you again for all they are doing to make this happen. To our community, please encourage those you know to get vaccinated. Each vaccine is critical to keeping the person who is vaccinated safe from COVID-19, and also our greater community.

Thank you and stay safe,

Mayor Robert Garcia

The City of Long Beach is following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and California Department of Public Health (CDPH) guidelines to distribute the vaccine. The City of Long Beach is committed to making sure everyone who lives, works or learns in Long Beach can receive a vaccine.

Applications Available for Long Beach Emergency Rental Assistance Program for Qualifying Tenants Impacted by COVID-19

NEED HELP WITH RENTAL ASSISTANCE?

The Long Beach Emergency Rental Assistance Program (LB-ERAP) is designed to assist landlords and income-eligible tenants (renters) who have experienced financial loss or hardship due to COVID-19 through rental assistance.

LB-ERAP is part of the Long Beach Recovery Act. The federal Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021 provides the funding to support the program, which is designed to implement the tenant protection laws enacted by the State of California (SB 91). The program is established to provide assistance exclusively to landlords and tenants in Long Beach.

LB-ERAP will help income-eligible tenants pay rent and utilities, both for past due bills and future payments. The program will prioritize assisting lower-income tenants who have been unemployed for 90 days or more and who are at risk of housing instability.

The on-line application portal for both tenants and landlords will be available the week of April 12, 2021
and is available in English, Spanish, Khmer, and Tagalog at the following link:

longbeach.gov/rentalassistance

HOW IT WORKS
Eligible landlords who participate in LB-ERAP can get reimbursed for 80% of an eligible tenant’s unpaid rent between April 1, 2020, and March 31, 2021, if they agree to waive the remaining 20% of unpaid rent during that specific time period.

Eligible tenants can apply for 80% of the past due rent between April 1, 2020, and March 31, 2021, which will be paid by the City directly to their landlord. Eligible tenants whose landlords choose not to participate in the program may apply on their own and receive 25% of unpaid rent between April 1, 2020, and March 31, 2021.
Detailed information about eligibility requirements can be found in the "Information for Landlords" and "Information for Tenants" sections on the website.
Eligible tenants can receive prospective (future) rental assistance equal to 25% of their monthly rent for up to three months.
Eligible tenants may also receive assistance for bills owed to City-owned utilities (Natural Gas, Water, & Refuse). Bills accumulated from April 1, 2020 through March 31, 2021 will be compensated at 100% of cost, limited to a total of 12 months.

The tenant must provide documentation that the City-owned utility bills are in their name or attest that the bills are directly related to the unit in which they live.
WHO CAN APPLY?

· Landlords who own or manage at least one residential rental unit in the City of Long Beach.
· Tenants (renters) who rent a residential unit or a room in the City of Long Beach.

HOW TO GET READY TO APPLY

1. Determine your eligibility as a landlord or tenant
2. Gather the necessary paperwork or documents needed for your application
3. Visit the website periodically for the latest program information and updates

Here’s some more great news. Long Beach just announced that effective immediately, our Health Department will begin vaccinating all Long Beach residents ages 50 years and older. We will be one of the first health jurisdictions in California to expand vaccine access to people in this age group.

For those who are in this age group and have previously signed up through our VaxLB system, our health team will contact you directly to schedule an appointment, or if you did not sign up for VaxLB, you may simply walk up to the Convention Center vaccination site between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday through Saturday, no appointment needed.

The State MyTurn.ca.gov will not enable appointments for 50+ individuals until April 1, so please do not look for that option until that time. However, if you live in Long Beach, and are 50 years of age and over, we will take care of you now.

Individuals must be able to prove they meet the eligibility requirement and live in Long Beach. Proof of residency documentation could include a utility bill with their address or a driver’s license. More information on eligibility and documentation can be found at longbeach.gov/VaxLB.

If you have any questions or need clarification, please email covid19vaccine@longbeach.gov or call 562.570.4636 and our team will do our best to get back to you as soon as we are able.

The City of Long Beach is following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and California Department of Public Health (CDPH) guidelines to distribute the vaccine. The City of Long Beach is committed to making sure everyone who lives, works or learns in Long Beach can receive a vaccine.

COVID-19 Vaccine Update from the Mayor Today.
***

I wanted to take a moment and provide an update on our city's vaccination efforts. Next week Long Beach will start vaccinating educators at LBUSD and LBCC and continue with vaccines for food and healthcare workers, and seniors 65 and over. We continue to administer vaccinations as supply becomes available.

Please know there is a statewide and national vaccine shortage so we can only vaccinate folks based on the supply we are receiving and all appointments for the next week are currently full.

We are now encouraging ALL residents to sign up for VaxLB notifications to receive eligibility and future appointment information. When appointments open up, we will notify you by email or text.

To date, we have administered 30,000 vaccines free of charge and City staff has responded to more than 20,000 inquiries received via email and calls on the vaccine information line.

Appointment slots are based on the allocation of vaccine doses that the City receives for the following week. Allocations vary each week and have ranged from 100 to 11,600 doses.

The City has received 2,100 doses for the week of Jan. 25 for vaccinations at the Convention Center and will be adjusting appointments at the site accordingly. Health Department officials will be working with the Long Beach Unified School District, Long Beach City College and others in the education sector, as well as some food workers to begin offering vaccine for folks within these groups. Additional appointments will be subject to new allocation of vaccine.

Long Beach residents who are teachers should first check with their employer about vaccine details but are encouraged to sign up through VaxLB to receive notifications when they are eligible to receive vaccination. Sign up here.

We estimate healthcare workers, educators, food workers and 65+ to include more than 90,000 people. The City does not expect to complete this phase for several weeks.

At this time, no further groups will be added to the eligibility list. The order and eligible groups are set by the state.

Remember, the COVID-19 vaccine is a two-dose regimen and Health Department officials also need to plan to provide the second dose to those who have already received the initial dose. As vaccine becomes available, the Health Department will contact individuals to notify them to schedule an appointment to receive their second dose.

People are encouraged to get their second vaccine as soon as they are notified of availability. While it is recommended for second doses to be administered within a one-month period, there is no maximum interval between first and second doses for either vaccine, and effectiveness will not be impacted if a second dose is administered after the initial 21- to 28-day waiting period.

All Long Beach residents are encouraged to visit VaxLB, our new online vaccination portal, to learn more about the rollout process and sign up to be notified when it is their turn to get the COVID-19 vaccine.
Individuals with additional questions may call 562.570.INFO (4636), option 6, or email COVID19Vaccine@longbeach.gov.

Thank you and stay safe,

Mayor Robert Garcia

The council office has reached out to us for help in contacting as many businesses as possible to get help to as many of them as possible.

Received from the mayor today:

Sustaining small businesses and community groups through this pandemic is a critical part of our response to COVID-19. This pandemic has devastated small businesses and caused record high unemployment nationwide. It will take federal funding like the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act and strong leadership to guide us through a recovery that lies in our future.

The funds will be primarily directed towards local small businesses and non-profit organizations. The application is available on the city’s CARES Act website today and funding distribution will occur after September 15.

I look forward to seeing the positive impacts investments like the ones below will have:

$4.1 million in funds to small business for recovery and technology improvements
$1 million in grants to Business Improvement District to continue marketing and promotions for local small businesses
$100,000 for small business education in multilingual formats for businesses outside existing Business Improvement Districts
$1 million for digital inclusion partnerships with community-based organizations to support equitable access to the internet and other digital resources
$200,000 for an economic equity study that will be conducted in partnership with CSULB and establish a baseline for economic recovery work going forward
$1.5 million in funding for working capital grants and arts education to support local arts, arts and culture
$1 million to local non-profit organizations to fund COVID-19 support services in the community

Thank you for your help!

Dear Neighbors,

You Count. You Matter. Your truth is real, you deserve representation, resources and accountability.

This month in particular, I have had a knot in my gut. The actions taken by Trump are intended to scare people, intimidate, divide and cause confusion all for a political win.

On Tuesday, Trump signed an executive order directing the Department of Commerce not to count undocumented immigrants when drawing congressional district lines. This is part of a concerted effort by the Trump administration to use the Department of Commerce and its power over the census to achieve partisan political gains.

This is just another act to confuse undocumented people and distract us from the current crises we face. Do not fall for it!

Under the U.S. Constitution, congressional representation is based on 1989 opinion from the Department of Justice, which was led by Barr at the time, acknowledges that under the Constitution, " Inhabitants of States who are undocumented [must] be included in the Census count."

We need everyone to complete their census forms. The results are used to determine local funding communities receive for key public services and how many seats each state gets in Congress. State and local officials also use Census counts to draw boundaries for congressional, state legislative, and school districts.

And while you are required by law to participate, the Census Bureau is also required by law to protect your answers. Your responses are used only to produce statistics. The Census Bureau does not disclose any personal information.
I, like many others, feel the abuse of this President. He continues to gaslight this country, attempting to confuse people, make them feel inferior, and scare them into believing he can protect American values. I know the only way to stop a bully is to not listen to their nonsense.

The Second District is one of the most diverse parts of the City. We have only reported 55.9% of the Second District has completed their census compared to the Long Beach and California response. This means we are not being counted. We won't get the resources we deserve, and we won't get congressional representation needed to have a voice in Washington. The 10 minutes of filling out the survey, will define the next 10 years. For more more information on the Census, visit the city's page.

We must take action and be counted.
You Count. You Matter.
Your truth is real and you deserve representation.
Take 5 mins to complete the census today.
