Any avocado lovers out there? High fat foods used to be demonized, but now fat is definitely making a come back and more, especially with the keto diet trend. Avocado is high in fat and calories, indeed, but it totally can be enjoyed as a part of a healthy eating plan šŸ˜‰

I love how versatile avocado is! Some ways I enjoy them are:
šŸ˜‹ Split a small avocado in half, top with pepper, salt, and a squeeze of lemon juice. Use a spoon to scoop out the meat and eat (yay, no extra dishes to wash!).
šŸ˜‹ Mash 1/3 of avocado on sprouted grain toast. top with sliced tomatoes and any other vegetables of your choice. Add spices, salt and/or pepper to taste.
šŸ˜‹ Top your salad, soup, or just about anything with cubed avocado pieces.
šŸ˜‹ Guac!
šŸ˜‹ Make avocado chocolate mouse.
šŸ˜‹ Mash/blend into salad dressing to add creaminess.
šŸ˜‹ Add to your smoothie.

Avocados are:
šŸ‘ High in heart healthy mono-unsaturated fat.
šŸ‘ High in fiber, avocados pack about 1 gram of fiber per 1 tablespoon. 😳
šŸ‘ Keeps you satisfied due to the high fat + fiber content.
šŸ‘ High in vitamin E, K, C, potassium, magnesium, folate and B vitamins.

Not sure if there is any truth to this, but my husband swears by long narrow avocado having smaller seed and more meat than a chubby one which tends to have a bigger seed. Any of you find that to be true? How do you enjoy your avocado?

Nutrition 101: Hydration. Water is not categorized as one of the macronutrients (fat, protein, carb) nor as micronutrients (vitamins, minerals), but it's soooooo essential to life right? We all know staying hydrated is super important. Just thinking about how our bodies are able to survive so much longer purely on water, compared to solely on food (without water), says a lot. Yet, we tend to overlook the importance of water. As a dietitian, I hear something along the line of " oh yeah, I haven't had any water today" from many many clients. Adequate hydration is super important for health and weight loss. Did you know that dehydration can:ā € ā €

šŸ’§slow down your metabolismā €
šŸ’§lead to overeatingā €
šŸ’§increase food cravingsā €
šŸ’§lead to lack of energy, concentration and feeling groggyā €
šŸ’§lead to muscle crampingā €
šŸ’§lead to constipationā €
šŸ’§lead to poor digestionā €
šŸ’§cause bad breathā €
šŸ’§cause/exacerbate dry skinā €
šŸ’§cause headacheā € .... etc, etc ā € ā €

So, what can you do if you tend to go through your day without drinking water? Here are some suggestions:ā €

😊 Start carrying around a water bottle everywhereā €
😊 Drink water right when you wake up in the morningā €
😊 Set reminders everywhere ā €
😊 Flavor water with fruit, vegetable, herbsā €
😊 Drink soda/seltzer water as treatsā € ā €

SB1192 goes into effect on January 1, 2019. A move towards reducing sugary beverage consumption by children. Any thoughts on this? :-)

"California is now the first state to pass a Healthy by Default Kids' Meals law SB 1192.... This bill would require a restaurant, as defined, that sells a children’s meal that includes a beverage, to make the default beverage water, sparkling water, or flavored water, as specified, or unflavored milk or a nondairy milk alternative, as specified..... The beverage listed or displayed on a restaurant menu or advertisement for a children’s meal shall be one of the default beverages listed in subdivision"

This month we hosted our first workshop! Josephine and I wanted to create a class that combined both of our passions: Yoga and food. We had a lot of fun preparing for the seminar. It was a very practical learning experience for us. For those of you who missed it, the topic was mindfulness.
