From our AAP:
Measles is one of the most contagious infectious diseases known – the virus can live for up to 2 hours in the air where infected people have coughed or sneezed, or on surfaces they may have touched. Symptoms include high fever accompanied by a blotchy red rash, cough and a runny nose.

Most people who have gotten sick during the ongoing measles outbreaks taking place around the country have not been vaccinated, serving as a reminder of the importance of vaccination for children. The MMR vaccine is highly effective in helping kids build the strongest immunity against measles. Parents are encouraged to speak with their pediatrician with questions about the MMR vaccine or measles.

A statement from American Academy of Pediatrics President, Dr. Susan J. Kressly:

The decision by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to downgrade its recommendations to protect infants from hepatitis B is a dangerous move that will harm children.

The American Academy of Pediatrics continues to recommend routine hepatitis B vaccination for all newborns: All babies should receive a first dose of the hepatitis B vaccine within 24 hours of birth, a second dose at one to two months, and a third dose at six months. The pacing of these doses has been rigorously tested and proven to be safe and effective over several decades.

Vaccinating all newborns against hepatitis B effectively prevents transmission of the virus to newborns during childbirth, supports them to build immunity against potential childhood infections, and ensures long-term protection into adulthood from a virus that can cause serious liver disease and liver cancer. Infants and children can be exposed to this virus by close caregivers who may not know they are infected. Delaying the birth dose of the hepatitis B vaccine has no clear benefits and leaves children vulnerable to infection.

Thanksgiving is the perfect time for reflection and giving thanks for all the little things in life. What are some little (but feel big) things we are thankful for?

Dr. Do: a nice jog with my girls this morning
Dr. Hsu: enjoying fall in Tokyo and grateful for health and family
Dr. Epstein: having quiet time at home with my boys and my furry animals
Dr. Wong: decorating the tree with my kids and running in a community turkey trot

And we are all so thankful for all the families connected to us through our pediatric home. Happy Thanksgiving to all! 🦃💗

Vaccines are safe and effective. They save lives. Numerous studies continue to show that vaccines do not cause autism.

From the AAP, regarding autism:
The prevalence of autism has increased over time. Researchers and health care professionals who care for children with autism have explained this is likely due to multiple factors, including: people becoming more aware of autism, improved screening, and updated diagnostic criteria to include other conditions on the autism spectrum.

Kudos to all the kids who played outside in the rain this weekend! Rain or shine, find some time to get some fresh air and exercise with your kids every weekend. It’s so tempting to stay inside, but that often leads to increase in screen time, which affects eyesight, fitness, and even mental health.

From the AAP:

Canada has officially lost its measles elimination status, and the United States could be next. Countries are at risk of losing their elimination status if an outbreak strain of the same virus persists for at least 12 months.

The most effective way to stop the spread of measles and achieve community immunity is through high vaccination rates - two doses of the MMR vaccine is 97% effective in preventing disease.
