FUR REAL. I’m continually amazed and fascinated by these gentle giants—the Maine Coons. On this National Cat Day, let’s celebrate by chatting about 5 common surgical conditions affecting this beautiful breed.
1️⃣ Hip Dysplasia – A developmental disorder where the hip joint forms abnormally, leading to instability and painful arthritis. Affects roughly 25% of Maine Coons, causing painful joint instability and arthritis, often needing surgery to improve mobility.
2️⃣ Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis (SCFE) – Maine Coons are 12 times more likely to develop this femoral neck fracture-like condition, which requires surgical stabilization or hip replacement (Vet Surg, 2016).
3️⃣ Spinal Muscular Atrophy – This inherited nerve disease causes muscle weakness and loss of mobility. While untreatable, surgeries may be necessary for related orthopedic complications.
4️⃣ Peritoneopericardial Diaphragmatic Hernia – A rare congenital defect where abdominal organs herniate into the chest cavity, requiring surgical repair for survival.
5️⃣ Patellar Luxation – The kneecap dislocates from its groove causing pain and limping; surgery realigns and stabilizes the kneecap to improve mobility.
Thanks to all those amazing people that help these magnificent cats live their best lives.
