I’m officially “quoting-Steve-Harvey-years-old.”

But seriously be selective about who you are sharing your dreams with and pay attention to how they respond. 🕵🏻‍♀️

Are we obligated to make the most of our access to opportunity, even if it means we struggle? Or did they come here so our lives would be easier?

If we choose to struggle, are we insulting their sacrifice?

I've been thinking about this since my interview with about immigrant-owned businesses. (podcast episode drops tomorrow, btw.)

We all know our parents want us to be successful, which they often define by our professional career. How does entrepreneurship fit into that?

I think there is a parallel with their journey to this country.

In many immigrant families, there is an emphasis on doing things the "right way." Immigrant parents take pride in using the system. Whether it's the privilege of navigating the bureaucratic documented immigration process or working their way through education and corporate institutions.

They may dismiss our criticisms of these same institutions because they witnessed so much corruption in their own countries. "At least here there is a chance."

Following your own career path is seen as too risky, and almost offensive, since it's not playing the game that they had to play. It's connected to "following our bliss" (🙄) and even being selfish.

(Nevermind the fact that almost everyone back home is an entrepreneur!)

If you are following your own career path and your family doesn't understand it: Rather than seeing it as straying from the path they started, reframe it as creating a new one.

They taught us risk is worth it. They taught us to persevere. What better way to honor their sacrifice than by creating our own destiny?

What do your parents think of your career choices?

It’s in our mission statement to promote access to care.

How did I design my business to ensure this? Here are just some of the ways:

🤝🤝 Providing trusted referrals to other agencies, practices and individual therapists. 88% of the people who reach out to us are connected to a therapist within a few days, even if it’s another practice. (The rest don’t get back to us or find it on their own. ✌🏼)

🤗 Promoting others’ offerings at all price ranges. We are collaborative not competitive.

🪢 Offering services at a range of prices. This doesn’t just mean reduced rates (we do that too), but having lower cost options such as group programs and workshops.

💸 Providing some services 100% free to the client while still paying our employees. These services include medical transition support letters, free workshops, not to mention all the information in our blog articles, podcast advice, and social media posts.

🧐 We charge what we need, not what we can. You’ll find therapists at all prices. Price alone doesn’t indicate if someone can help you. As with any business, if they can explain WHY they charge what they charge, it’s a good sign that they know what they are doing and why. I know where every cent in my business goes, and yes some of it goes in my pocket.

Unlike some business structures, we don’t have other sources of funding. That means the only way we support the work we do is through our services.

When those who are able to, pay full price, they are supporting all the other folks who are not able to.

We avoid change for all kinds of reasons. Just knowing it’s the right choice doesn’t always make it easier.

Waiting for the right circumstances, the right time, the right words can be a form of subconscious procrastination.

But holding your nose and jumping in before you’re ready can be a way to avoid responsibility for your choices too.

As long as you’re being honest with yourself, you can’t go wrong.

It doesn’t have to be perfect to be right.

If we’re caught between two cultures or communities - not quite fitting in to either - end of year celebrations can be confusing and rejecting.

You may have already taken the big step of not playing along with what your family did every year. That first holiday when you don’t automatically go home is a big deal.

But then what are we left with?

Doing anti-holidays, Friendsgiving, or treating it like a normal day are all great options.

You also have the right to find your own way back to traditions, without the negativity or drama that pushed you away in the first place.

You’ll be surprised at what you can learn about your people with just a little research.

Find the recipes, music, rituals, songs, prayers, poems, clothing, colors, and all the other things associated with your people.

Incorporate what feels doable and continue your own traditions on your terms.

You deserve to take your place as part of a community too.

You deserve to be part of your people’s legacy too.

You deserve to feel connected to something greater than you too.

You deserve to embrace your identity too.

Sending you so much love this season. ❤️

Don’t let anyone (including yourself) convince you that you don’t deserve a reaction to your circumstances.
