Navigating the New CMS WISeR Model for Skin and Tissue Substitutes
🧐 WoundHeroes is closely monitoring the new CMS regulatory framework, the Wasteful and Inappropriate Service Reduction (WISeR) Model.
This new model, set to begin on January 1, 2026, will significantly impact providers utilizing "skin and tissue substitutes." The WISeR model will leverage enhanced technologies, including AI and machine learning, to review these services for medical necessity, aiming to reduce inappropriate utilization and ensure evidence-based care.
🇺🇸 Key implications for providers in the six participating states (NJ, OH, OK, TX, AZ, WA) include:
• New Review Process: Providers must choose between a prior authorization request or a post-service/pre-payment review for selected services, including skin substitutes.
• Compliance Focus: The model aims to streamline reviews for services vulnerable to fraud, waste, and abuse, placing a strong emphasis on medical necessity documentation.
• "Gold Card" Exemption: Providers with demonstrated records of compliance may become exempt from the WISeR review process, reducing administrative burden.
As an organization dedicated to efficacious and evidence-based wound care solutions, WoundHeroes supports initiatives that align payment with appropriate, high-value clinical practices. We are committed to providing our partners with the necessary clinical and economic evidence to navigate this new landscape successfully.
We will continue to analyze the WISeR model's impact on the wound care space and provide further updates.
